Dunedin.— The Otago. Daily Thncs, of August 31, reports : — The week just closed being the last of the month accounts in some measure for the dull feeli2i«.' which has been manifested in the markets. As previously noticed, no tr.insacr tions of particular interest have transpired j amongst importers, today's business forming no exception. Second hoU3es have not, howeveT, been quite so slack, and it is possible to record an improving demand both for uucountry and coastwise requirements. Advices from Melbourne are generally more encouraging than those previously received, and have tended to strengthen values of several staples. Breadstuffs we note as possessing more linnness. Flour has been selling only in small parcels, hut the disposition to concede in price has ceased. Oats continue yery slack, and only a move upwards in. the Melbourne market would help the value here ; we quote 2s sd, with very dull inquiry. Liquids generally maintain previous values. Brandies and whiskies possess more firmness, without, however, any change in price. Qenevas are rather easier. Beers in bulk have been moving in small parcels. Bottled beers extremely quiet. Hemp goods hang upon importers' hands, and can only at present be quitted at low figures. Kerosene is again without attention. Sugars, teas, oilmen's stores, galvanised iron, and several minor items have been placed by auction ; in all these transactions, prices have been fairly maintained. The same paper of Sept. 1 reports : In the day's business there is nothing of any moment to note. Impoi^ houses a -e still very quies, and rqt making any considerable svlos. Miscellaneous parcels for current wants are moving at well maintained prices, bill; the smallness of transactions forbid any special reference. The market for breadstuff's is without alteration iv value, and with no, greater amount of business doing, We no,te small sates of Campbellton whisky at 5s 6d, and of Sco.tch ales at L 5. ss, in bond. Oilmen's stores, and some small lots of provisions have also been quitted.
