l We learn that the battery of Royal Artillery^ so long in garrison in Melboxirne, under the command of Brevet-Colonel C. H. Smith, will leave for Ceylon as soon as tonnage can be procured. A man named M'Guinness, who was found guilty of manslaughter, and sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment, with hard labor, in Dublin, in June, was proprietor of a house let in tenements, in which Bridget Doherty lived. He had served her with a " notice to quit." She was put out, but she forced her way back i lto the house, her husband being away from home. M'Guinness, angry at this, entered the apartment, and the woman being in bed, took her child, aged seven, by the hair and threw it downstairs. He dragged the mother out of bed to the hearthstone. She had her infant in her arms, and he struck it with a pair of iron pincers on the head, the brains immediately protruding. He struck the mother also with the pincers on the arm. She owed -a fortnight* rent,
