It is officially announced by an advertisement in another column that the nomination of candidates for the representation of Greymouth in the Provincial Council will take place to-morrow, awl that the poll -will be taken on the following day. This short notice will doubtless take the public by surprise ; but it is in our power to make an explanation wliy longer notice has not been Ep'vcn. Yfe yesterday morning received a telegram from the Returning Oilicer, Mr Sale, stating that the notice was forwarded to us for publication on the 10th inst. ; vliidi, however, did not reach us until Saturday evening, by the s.s. Kennedy, and the envelope bears the Hokitika Post-office ' stamp of the 11th. It is much to be regretted that this "contretemps" has occurred, as it ■will undoubtedly be the 'means of proventing many persons from voting who avouUl otherwise liavc been desirous to exercise the franchise. The responsibility evidently rest's with some one in the Commissioner's office, for had the notice been posted to us on tho 10th, as stated, ifc would liave duly appeared. in our .Saturday's issue. We trust that tlie llcturning Officer will cause strict enquiry to be made concerning tins matter, and that' the blame will be visited on the proper shoulders.
