One of them handed a Ll -note in payment, change forrwhich was given by the landlord from his cash-bqx; which he kept on a shelf behind the counter, Prisoners then asked for water, refusing to take lemonade, and the prosecutor went out. to procure some. When he returned, the cash-box was gone, and one of, the prisoners, Moriarty had also left. They pretended to make jest of the affair, and prosecutor- gave them more drink and ran out for the' police. Moriarty hq,d at that time returned, and when the police came they arrested Mm. The prosecutor swore that no one but the prisoner could have entered the house without; his knowledge, and that he was perfectly sober. Ponsonby, s. s. ■ Claud Hamilton, was eh arged, on the information of Alexander Stevenson, postmaster at J&reymoufch, with having jm or about the Gth February, neglected to use due diligence, in delivering a mail at Grey-moutlij-'placed on board his vessel at Nelson on the 4th. The facts of the case .were that the Claud Hamilton,' on the voyage in question, passed .Greymouth and went on to . Hokitikaj intending' to return immediately to this port with the mail. The agent «vt ' Hokitika* ordered the vessel to the Haast River,- and in consequence the vessel was I detained /until the iltk Mr G. W. Moss I appeared! for Captain Ponsonby. The Magisf Jjrate^inflicted a penalty of L2O, although the Act;ma^e;the;c^p;ain liable to a fine of LIOO. -Mr Moss, through his solicitor Mr O'LoughUn, gave notice of appeal.
