The s.s. Kennedy took her departure fpr Pakihi and Buller yesterday morning. tl'c time of her sailing a ♦•cry tenipessea was tumbling over the bar, and it expected the steamer would have a ter s rible buffeting on going out. Ent she was f ■-.■'■ so well bandlcil that she ploughed through the breakers in most gallant .',^ile, and apparently without shi])ping !■ anyy.water. She returns from thence to this'-pdrfc direct, and is expected to arrive on Wednesday moriir ng's tide. Slip is to sail again for Pakihi .and the Buller on Thursday morning, and thence proceeds to Nelson. The work of refitting the Persevere is very raj i lly proceeding, and we ir.ist that by tl c middle of next week the little boat will be . again fairly at work. Her paddle-boxes, funnel, and cabin-companion are in position, and the shattered bulwarks replaced by new ones. Her foremast is also stepped, and the rigging set up. We notice that the new work is most substantial, and will wonderfully w.«*fitrengthen her, the sponsons especially, being "*"* constructed of seven : inch timber, instead of (as originally) three-inch. She will now be able to run alongside a vessel in the roadstead, with less fear of sustaining damage. — W. C. Times, 3rd inst. The' schooner Florence, which left Melbourne on the 17th ul^, arrived at llokitika pn Wednesday. The schooner Prince Consort, from Cliristpliurch, which arrived at Hokitika on Friday, reports that between Cape Terawitti and Port Nicholson Heads the wreck pf a two-masted vessel was passed. One masthead and rigging, and a bare pole, were all that were standing. The wreck was suppps.ed to be that of a timber laden vessel, and it was drifting through the Straits with the strong purrent. The s.s. Alhambra, from Melbourne, arrived off Hokitika on Friday evening, but pwing to the thick and unfavorable weather pould not be communicated with. The diminutive cutter Alhambra was thrown on her beam end yesterday evening whilst, crossing the bar. The little craft was coming in apparently well b,efore a/ stiff westerly wind, when a heavy sea struck her. and shifted her balJasjb. Great excitement was caused amongst those who witnessed the occurrence, and a number of persons at once went across to the North Spit ty) ascertain the fate of th,e crew. We are happy %o state that all hands, con T sisting of the master and two others, were able to jump ashore a short distance ab,ove the Thane, and the vessel was stranded. On Saturday morning, at daybreak, a schooner, evidently water-Jogged, was observed off the Saltwater Crgek, drifting before the wind to the sou^hwar(L. N,o one was seen on the vessei, and, although the steamer Alhambra was in sight and several small craft were within observation, none pf them appeared to notioe the wreck, or to make any effort to approach it. The cutter Dart, from Pakihi, ai-rived putside the bar on Saturday morning, and was attempting to enter the river under sail, when, just as she got over the break the wind ——•' — failed, and, finding the fresh too strong for her, the captain beached his vessel on tho Korth Spit, inside the bar. She oaine up the river by last night's tide.
