At to-day’s wool sale the catalogue comprised 10,100 hales. Good competition was experienced, and prices were firmly maintained.

It is announced that Mr F. Napier Broome, C.M.G., Lieutenant-Governor of Mauritius, has been appointed to succeed Sir Wm. Robinson as Governor of Western Australia. The British Government has recommended General Sir Wm. Evelyn Wood to the Egyptian Government for appointment to the position of Commander-In-Chief of the Egyptian army.

The message of President Arthur to Congress recommends a slower extinction of the national debt of the United States than has been pursued for some time past Ho further urges some abolition of taxation, and points out that it may he expected that revenue from spirits will show a large reduction in the Customs duties.

Mr Frederick Napier Broome, formerly a Canterbury settler, and latterly the Colonial Secretary of Mauritius, has been appointed Governor of Western Australia. He is the husband of Lady Barker. The Seine has overflowed its hanks, causing alarming floods in the neighbourhood of Paris.
