ST. ALBANS BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held last evening, at 7.30. | Present His Worship the Mayor, Ors. Money, Bull, Mann, Bountree and Blakiston. I Messrs Dickenson, Turner and Smith, the recently eleoted Councillors, having made the usual declaration, took their seats at the Council table. The communication from the Board of Health, read at the last meeting of the Council was brought forward for discussion, and it was determined that health matters in the borough remain in statu quo. The works committee's report called attention to the trials of certain pumps, with a view to watering the roads of the borough, and it was suggested that two tanks be ereoted—one atthe Carlton Mill, the other in the Council yard, and that Flood's pumps, whioh forced up forty gallons of water per minute, be adopted. The question then arose as to the probable supply of water in the Council yard, and the Mayor strongly urged that an artesian well should be sunk to the lower strata, at a cost of say £l2O. Or. Turner thought that Flood's pump could be fixed in Peacock'a oreek, and save the expense of well sinking. The Mayor wished to say that the idea of a speoial rate was an absurdity. Watering their roads meant cheap maintenance—oheaper than metalling. After a long discussion the matter was referred to the works oommittee, on the motion of Cr. Turner. It being understood that a water-oart be procured, and tenders for horse and driver be called for. The finance of the past fortnight showed the reoeipts as £497 6s Hid ; expenditure, £238 12s 9id ; bank balance, £487 17s lid. Crs. Turner and Bountree were elected members of the finance oommittee, and Cr. Dickenson was elected a member of the works oommittee. Two letters were read from the Avon Boad Board ; the first conveying the thanks of the Board for its long oooupanoy of the Council Chamber, the second enclosing a cheque for £336 Is 9d, being the balanoe of sale of the Avon Board reserves. The letters were reoeived. This was all the business.
Sydenham.—A full meeting of the ratepayers of this borongh was held last evening at the Oddfellows' Hall, Colombo road, Sydenham, when a requisition, signed by upwards of 200 of the burgesses and seven of the borongh councillors, was presented to the Mayor of Sydenham, asking him to again oome forward for the Mayoralty. His Worship the Mayor thanked the gentlemen presenting the requisition, and briefly intimated his willingness in concurring with the request preferred.
