By Flbctric Telegraph—Copyright, [reuter's telegrams] LONDON, September 14. The homeward Australian mails which left Melbourne on Ist August were delivered here to day via Brindisi. The Bank of England has to-day raised the rate of discount to 5 per cent. Arrived Ship Crownthorpe from Napier (May 20th). Received Sept. 16, 3 p.m. The Homeward Australian and New Zealand mails which left Auckland on August 15 th, and were being conveyed from New York in the Guion line steamship Alaska, have been burned, a fire having occurred in the mail room aboard that vessel. A number of registered letters were among the mails destroyed. Received 16th, 8 p.m. At to-day's wool sales 7700 bales were offered. Prices wera firm for the various lots catalogued, but the demand was not active. Faulty and scoured are now somewhat cheaper. H.M.S. Phoenix, six guns, 1137 tons, belonging to the North American Squadron, has been wrecked at Charlotte Town, in Prince Edward's Island. The crew were saved. BERLIN, September 14. Prince Bismarck has for some time past been indisposed, and his health is daily becoming more precarious. He has been ordered by his medical advisers to totally abstain from public business. ["Abous" BsaauxM.2 LONDON, September 14. Smallpox has broken out amongst the Malay sailors at Capetown, and a large number of deaths have occurred. The matter is regarded as very serious, and causes much anxiety. It is suspected that the fire in the mail room of the Alaska was caused by explosives contained in the mails. There were only ten sacks of newspapers and two bags of letters burned. Received 0.15 a.m. The Australian cricketers commenced a match to-day at Manchester against eleven representing the North of England. The home team went in first, and at the close of the day's play had lost nine wickets for 193 runs. September 15. The cricket match at Manchester between the Australian team and Eleven of the North of England was resumed to-day. The home team continued their first innings, whioh closed for a total of 245. The Australians then went in for their first innings, and were all disposed of for 110. The visitors, being 135 behind their opponents, followed on their innings, and when the stumps were drawn for the day had scored 59 for the loss of three wickets.

LONDON, September 15th, 3.45 p.m. In the boat race to-day, a crew from the Thames Rowing Club beat the Hillsdale crew (American).
