[FEB PBBSS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, September 14 James Bird, carter, while attempting to drive a dray lead of coals across the pavement into the Masonic Hotel yard, was thrown from the dray, which passed over him. No hopes are entertained of his recovery. A burglar was captured this afternoon in the Rev. Mr Gye’s house, Franklin road, plundering it during the absence of the inmates. He was detected by a woman living near entering by a bach window. She informed the reighbors living near, and Messrs Knox and H 11, officers of the Customs, lately Horn Christchurch, proceeded to the premises. The burglar bolted, but after a sharp chase was captured and taken to the police station. Ho was proved to be Robert Marsh, aged thirty-five years, from Christchurch. At his residence nearly the whole booty of late burglaries was found, and a quantity of keys of all descriptions, a revolver, and women’s false hair plaits. Woods, drowned last night, leaves a wife and large family. The other man was named Wm. Musgrove. Both bodies have been been found to-day. Musgrove was a good swimmer, and was formerly in the navy. At the B.M. Court a number of claims in respect of the property tax came up for hearing, but as the majority of the oases were defended, the Court, in pursuance of arrangement, adjourned them for a week. Two of these had been previously withdrawn by the property tax commissioner, Mr J. Sperry, but, notwithstanding that fact, costs were asked for on behalf of defendants, inasmuch as they had been wrongfully sued. The defendants’ counsel said the commissioner had acted in ignorance of the law, and saed one of his clients B. Anderson, as agent for someone else, and then, after discovering his blunder, telegraphed the withdrawal of the proceedings, but not before Anderson had incurred some expense in getting legal advice. Throughout the matter the Government had exhibited the greatest laxity and ignorance of law. Mr Williamson, who appeared for the commissioner, remarked suing of an agent was not the only mistake that had been made, as in several instances summonses had actually been issued against dead men, A guinea costs was allowed to Anderson.

WELLINGTON, September 14. The Union Steam Shipping Company have agreed to issue return tickets at single fares to members of the New Zealand Bifle Association attending the competition at Dunedin in November next.

The last of the hull of the Lioness disappeared last night apparently into deep water. The only part now visible is the butt end of the foremast, which is still fast to the hull by steel guysi The spar will be hauled out to-day or to-morrow by a steam winoh. TIMABU, September 14. The borough elections to-day resulted in the five old councillors and seven new ones being returned. A strong southerly gale, accompanied by a very heavy rainfall, set in this afternoon. At the Harbor Board to-day, the engineer reported that no less than 75ft of solid work had been added to the outer end of the breakwater during the past month. Flans were submitted for additional jetty accommodation.

OAMABU, September 14. George Warner, arrested in Melbourne on a charge ol fraudulent insolvency, was brought before the R.M. to-day, and after evidence had been taken the accused was committed to take his trial at the next sitting of the District Court.

At the quarterly meeting of the Oamaru Presbytery it was decided, in regard to the question of the marriage with a deceased wife’s sister, by five votes to fanr, that the Church should adhere to the doctrine of the Confession of Faith, which forbids such marriages. One of the Presbytery said that the legalisation of such marriages was only fit for a colony of rabbits, DUNEDIN, September 14. Nominations close on Saturday evening for the Dunedin Cup. The harbor-master, reporting to-day to the Harbor Board, says the lowest depth of water on the bar is now 19It at low water, which gives 24ft at ordinary high tide. Two vessels drawing 20Jtt came in last month at half tide.

A store and dwelling has been burned down at Shag Point, under circumstances leading to a very strong suspicion of incendiarism. The owner lives several miles away, and was absent. Some time ago the same store was robbed of about £6O worth of goods. The New Zealand Cement and Patent Stone Company agreed to wind np voluntarily to-day. Moses Ackerman Price was committed for trial to-day for embezzlement from a Lodge of Druids.

An elderly man, named .Robert Wilson, with a grown up family, was found drowned in the bay this morning. He has not been well lately, and has been in the habit of going out for a walk every morning, and went out this morning as usual. It is presumed be fell off the embankment on the reclamation works.

The Equitable Insurance Company has added four names to its list of provisional directors for Dunedin, which now numbers twenty-two, and there are fifteen in Invercargill,
