Mauritius advices, under date October Bth, report the Veteran and the Ocean Hanger loading for Lyttelton. Tha barque Seatoller, the first of the new lino of vessels recently established by Messrs Maling and Co. „ of this city, between Liverpool and Lyttelton, arrived yesterday from Dunedin, at which port she arrived on October 26th to discharge the Otago portion of her cargo. She left Liverpool on the 18th of Jnly, and thns made the voyage oat in 100 days, eigbty-eight from land to land. She will be berthed this morning, and immediately commence to land the remainder of her original cargo. The well known colonial steamer Alhambra came into port on Saturday, at 2.30 p.m., from Dnnedin and Melbourne. Her appearance in harbor with the distinctive red funnel at once identified her as having passed into the service of the powerful “ red funnel line,” the Union Steamship Company. Though it is not very many years since the Alhambra was regarded as one of the most palatial steamers in the intercolonial trade of Australasia, the strides which have been made in steamer building, their improved speed, cargo working arrangements and passenger carrying attractions have been so extensive, and have found such wonderful patronage by the Union Company of this colony, that the public may almost wonder how such boats as tha Alhambra ever enjoyed such popularity for speed and elegance. The vessel has been temporarily placed, it is said, in the trade by the Union Company until their fleet is increased by the arrival of the steamers now being built at Lome. The Alhambra possesses by no means am indifferent or nnpretentious looking saloon aft, and has the name of being a first class sea boat, qualities of some importance to the seagoing public. She left at midnight on Saturday for Wellington, West Coast ports of the Middle Island, and Newcastle, N.S.W.
