NEWS OF THE DAY.
The Mayoralty. Messrs Gapes and Ayers were the only candidates nominated today for the Mayoralty of Christchurch. Tho polling takes place on the 24;h inst.
Theatre Boyal.—“ Shin Fane” was repeated last night to a good house. The same bill will be played this evening.
The Bellringers.—The Lynch Family of Bellringers arrived from Hokitika this morning, after a moat suooefsfnl tour. Unfortunately the bad weather which has prevailed during their trip has totally incapacitated one of the family (Mr William Lynob) from appearing in public for some time, as he has caught cold, which has brought on congestion of the lungs so seriously that the services of Dr. McCarthy, of Bangiora, have been called in, and the invalid will remain under his roof until his recovery.
Primitive Methodists.—The anniversary tea in connection with the Primitive Methodist Sunday School was beld last evening, when a large number attended. After tea the secretary read the report, which showed the school to be in a fair state of advancement.. With the exception of an interesting address by Mrs Holder, the evening was devoted to singing and recitations by the scholars. After the' usual votes of thanks, one of the most successful anniversaries was brought to a close by the pronouncing of the Benediction.
Working Men's Club.—At the Working Men’s Club and M.S.A. was commenced last evening a series of lectures and readings under the supervision of the committee, who intend to continue the same, there being many among its members who are anxious and willing to show their appreciation of the benefit derived from an institution of that kind, and are ready to give unto others the benefit of their experience and travels. The committee have had many offers prior to this, but their funds being to a certain extent limited, and not wishing to run into debt, they have refrained from accepting them. The apartments up stairs being now completed, they accepted tho offer of Mr Thomas Ingleson, one of their men hers, to give a reading from his journal, written by himself, extending back for near fifty years, entitled the “ Battle of Life.” In his reading Mr Ingleson introduced many sketches —humorous, descriptive ai d pathetic —which were listened Co with rapt attention hy a large number of the members; one a description of Sydney harbor and Melbourne in 1819, showing what a marked difference there is between that time and the present. Mr Ingleson having lately returned from England via Sydney and Melbourne, another sketch was upon the diet and accommodation on board the s.s, Lusitania, which was in itself quite a burlesque and a treat to listen to. The committee have reasons to congratulate themselves upon the success of their first endeavor, and intend doing th.ir utmost to make the club second to none in New Z island. At the close of the lecture Mr Ingleson received a hearty vote of thanks, and was earnestly requested to give another reading at his earliest convenience.
Trout. —On Tuesday morning Mr W. L. Fowler took 500 young trout forward by tho morning train North, to be placed in Late Guyon. After leaving the Hurunui, a long distarce of the journey will have to be performed on horseback.
ODDFELtowaair.—The presentation of the Dispensation of the L iyal Leeston Lodge of Oddfellows took place on Monday evening by the D : striot Officers belonging to the North Canterbury district. Visiting brothers were present from the Loyal Bonthbridge, Doyle* ston, and Perseverance Lodge, Christchurch. P GK John MoVinnie of the Doyleston Lodge presided as N GK, P.GK S. C. Doyle, also of Doyleston Lodge, as V.GK, and P.GK William Clark, of Southbridge, as G.M. After transacting some routine business, Provincial 9 M, 0 J. Wilkins presented the dispensation No. 6380 to the Lodge, and in a few well chosen remarks, congratulated them on the progress of the Lodge since it was opened. The brethren subsequently adjourned to a supper provided by Brother Spring, to which ample j istico was done. Oeickrt. —A match was played yesterday on the Press ground between eleven of the Press and eleven of Lincoln Cricket Club. Che Lincoln team, in their first innings, put together 35, of which O’Callaghan made 17. The first innings of the Press resulted in 54, to which Brunt contributed 13, and Andrews and Ashbolt 10 each. The second innings of Lincoln closed for 56, of which Whitier made 14. leaving the Press 38 to get to win, a feat aooompliohed just as time was up, for the loss of one wicket, W. G. Atack and French each scoring 14, not out. Tho howling on both sides was good, O’Callaghan, Blair, and Tajlor doing the trundling on behalf of Lincoln, For the Press, W. H. Atack bawled very well, his analysis showing eleven wickets for 26 runs. W. G. Atack and Smith also bowled well for the Press. Ashbceton Mayobap Election. — Mr Hugo Friedlander was re-elected Mayor of Ashburton unopposed yesterday. Fbbnsidb Faembes’ Association. —The usual monthly meeting of this association was not held on Monday evening. The next meeting has been arranged for Monday next, when it is hoped that there will be a fair attendance. Pigeon Match at Bangioba. —A match has be«n arranged between six members of the North Canterbury Pigeon Club and the members of the Ohristohuroh Club. The match will come off in Mr J. Boberts’paddock on the Ea«t belt t' -morrow.
Kaiapoi Cricket Club, —A meeting of the committee of this club was held on Monday, at which Mr Dixon resigned his office as secretary, and Mr O. Hay man was elected in his place. An eleven was selected to play against the Sefton Club on Saturday. The Mail. —Our Wellington correspondent telegraphed last night as follows :—The Wanaha with the San Francisco mail left Taranaki for Wellington direct at 10 30 a.m. to-day, and is expected here at daylight tomorrow morning. The Canterbury and Otago mails will be transhipped to the Penguin, which goes South at eleven o’clock, and should reach Lyttelton before daylight on Thursday. Proposed Match with the Austbaliah Eleven —the following have been selected 10 practice in view of the interprovincial and possible match with the Australian Eleven : Messrs D. Ashby, H. J. Beswick, W. Beard, O. 0. Oorfe, E. J. Cette rill, E. Fowler, J, Fowler, J. Fowke, O. Frith, W. Frith, E. T. A, Puller, M. J. Godby, J. Hartland, W. B. Leach, W. Leach, H. W. Moore, A. M. Ollivior, E. J. Boss, W. P. Reeves, H. H. Saoretan, E. O. J. Stevens, Qeo. Watson, J. Wheatley, A. White, and P. Wilding. The selection committee wish it to be distinctly understood that they reserve to themselves the right to alter or add to the above names at any time. Practices will be held every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 4 p.m., at which regular attendance is requested.
Mansbtillb and Banoioba Drainage Boabd.—it is expected that at an early date tnis Board will assume its functions should the question of the legality of its position be then definitely decided. A rate will bo levied and the works in hand pushed forward.
Academy op Music. —To-night the Lydia Howarde Opera Bouffe Company open their season at the Academy with “ Robinson Crusoe." The burlesque will be placed on the stage in a manner which has seldom been seen here, and the management have further arranged to keep the stalls select. The opening piece is very well spoken of by the Dunedin papers. Oust. —The annual demonstration in connection with the Templars and Oddfellows, consisting of public sports, procession, tea, and entertainment, will take place at the Cust on Boxing Day. A strong committee has been appointed to carry out the arrangements, and there is rvery prospect of the affair turning out a decided success.
Ashburton Borough Council.—At the meeting of the above Council, held last Monday evening, the Mayor stated that there was a sum of £473 6s lid to the credit of the Council. The sum of £BB4 Is had been received as subsidy from tho Government. A letter from tho Fire Insurance Association was read, enclosing a cheque for £3O for the Fi'e Brigade, and making enquiries as regards tho cost, &0., of a fire engine. A sum of £5 \vs« voted to the school children’s treat fund. Re a petition complaining of a drain on the Bast town belt it was resolved—“ That to enable this Council to cover In the outfall drain, his Worship the Mayor interview the County Council re water pipes, requesting the same be handed over to the borough, with power to deal with same in connection with water supply and drainage.” Or. Harrison gave notice that he would move at next meeting—“ That the sidewalks on East street be asphalted, from the outer edge to a sufficient width to allow of two persons passing each other, from the Post-Office to Lancaster’s, and that the owners of property facing thereon be r equired to pay a proportion of the coat thereof.” The Council adjourned, after having transacted some business of a minor importance.

The W.M. and members of the Unanimity Lodge, 8.0., were present on the oecasion, having char ered a special train to come to Christchurch. The installation of the office: 8 elect will take place at the lodge mealing in December.
Diocesan Sunday School Association —The umal monthly meeting of the members of this association will be held in St. Luke’s °cho >lroom, next Thursday evening, at 7.39, when tho Rev. J. W. Stack will lecture on the History of the Church Mission in New Zealand ” a subject which, in the hands of one so familiar with it, cannot fail to be deeply interesting.

A Shbabino Match —The match between B. Jellett and J. Burton, for £25 a-eide, ■hearing 100 sheep, took place to day at Mr McFarlane’s farm, Woodville, near Bolleston, and resulted in an easy victory for the former. Time, 5 hours 43 minutes
Mb Gapks’ Committbh. —A largo and influential meeting of Mr Gapes’ committee and supporters was held at Gee’s rooms last evening. The business was of the usual kind in connection with elections, and was very lengthy and satisfactory. Mr Binstead was in the chair. Kaiapoi Pbbsbytbbiak Chtjboh.—A meeting of church members was held on Monday afternoon, at which the E;v. Mr Oairns, Moderator, presided. The Bevs. Mr Hill and Mr Blake were present as part of the deputation from Presbytery. After a long discussion and various proposed amendments in reference to the payment of the arrears of the Bev. W. McGregor’s stipend, it was resolved ta tender £IOO in payment of all demands.
