WRECKED STEAMERS AND “MISSING” VESSELS.

We (“ Post ”) are indebted to the courtesy

of Captain Fairchild, commander of the Government steamer Hinemoa, for the following most interesting lists and details of the wrecks and other fatal disasters to shipping which have occurred on and off the New Zealand coast daring the lust thirty years —from 1850 to 1880. Captain Fairchild has been engaged at intervals during the last twenty years in the compilation of this “ black list,” which deserves careful perusal, and contains matter for most serious reflection. The lisfc t of course, is not a complete catalogue of all the disasters which have occurred on the New Zealand coast during the period named, but the three headings under which the vessels are classed will sufficiently explain the scope of the record : Return of Steamers Wrecked in New Zealand, the first being in 1857, giving the name of steamer, where wrecked, probable value, and name of master.
