A FEW FACTS ABOUT WOOL.
We find the following information in an article on the wool industry of Australia, published in the Melbourne “ Arbus’ ” Esbibition supplement:—“ln 1879 the Australian colonies exported 313,274 336ib of wool, whioh was valued at £ls 901,789. This return includes New Zealand, which con! ributes 63,220,8101 b. of wool, valued at £3,120,439 a good return from _ a country thet only commenced exporting wool in 1813. The export from Victoria was 47.973,C'911b, valued at £2 653,528. It is not only by increasing the number of sheep that Australian sheep farmers have increased their export of wool. The we-gbt of the Ueecas has been nearly doubled by improvements effected in the bread of sheep by the use of high class rams. In 1860, the average production of wool per sheep in Australia was 2941 b greasy aud 1.70 washed. In 1870 the yield per head had increased to 3 521 b per head greasy and 2.051 b psr head washed. In 1877 the yield was 4.261 b per head greasy, and 2361 b washed; so that, in less than twenty years, the average yield of wool per sheep throughout Australia was nearly doubled ; and in connection with this increase in the yield it must be taken into consideration lhat the fleeces, both washed and greasy, were sent to market in a much better condition in 1877 £bon in 1860,”
