Primitive Methodist District Assembly.—At Tuesday's session, the stations of the ministers passed the second and third reading. The appointments for the ensuing year are as follows : —New Plymouth, Bev. J. Sharp; Wellington,"! D. Dutton, F.8.A.5., W. S. Potter; Auckland, 1., J. Long ; Auckland, 11., J. Nixon; Inveroargill, O. E Ward ; Timaru, J. Dumbell; Thames, T. W. Adamson; Dunedin, 1., J. Ward, D. G. Eord (Con.) ; Dunedin, 11., G-. Smith; Greendale, J. G-uy ; Christchuroh, J. Clover j Manawatu, P. W. Jones, J. H. Luke; Ashburton, A. J. Smith ; Geraldine, T. Sadler ; Oamaru, C. E. Barley ; Waimate, one to be obtained. The students' examiners for the year are Bevs. D. Dutton and C. E. Barley. The district building, publishing and other committees were appointed. Bev. W. J. Dean is district seoretary. The n«xt District ABs»mbly will be held in Dunedin I' January ISSI. Votes of thanks were accorded to various gentlemen for guts O land in different parts of the colony, also to the friends who have entertained the representatives. The meeting closed with singing and prayer this morning. Bev. D. Dutton delivered a lecture last evening in Cambridge terrace church. The subject was " Beligion and Science." Owing to the unfavorable weather the attendance was not large. Those who was present, however, thoroughly appreciated the lecturer's efforts. The proceeds were handed over to the school building fund.

Court today, there were only two oases on the criminal charge-sheet. Rose Lake, charged with vagrancy, was proved guilty, and three previous convictions being recorded against Iter, she was sent to gaol for twelve months. "William Connolly, alias Molloy, was charged with being concerned in the riot on Boxing Day. Mr Perceval appeared for the accused. Inspector Hickson asked for a remand till Friday, but on the representation of counsel for the defence that he had witnesses to prove clearly that it was a case of mistaken identity, the Court decided to hear evidence at once. Six witnesses were called, who clearly proved an alibi, and Connolly was discharged. Thk Ibish DiSTßHsa.—His Worship the Mayor has received the following telegram from the Mayor of Auckland : —" Auckland, January 13th. I have reoeived the following telegram :—' Mayor, Auckland. Distress increasing. Aid urgently required. Publish colonies.—Lobs Mayoe Telegraph communications to Dublin.' I infer thai I am requested to communicate leading cities in colony.—Thos. Peacock, Mayor, Auckland." His Worship intends laying the telegram before the City Council at its meeting on Monday evening next. Sunday School Pio-nio.—The pio-nio of the Church of England and Wesleyan Sunday Schools from Port will be held to-morrow, Thursday, at Hillsborough, in one of Mr Garland'B paddocks. The schools leave Lyttelton by special train at 9.30 a.m. Kaiapoi Domain Boabd.—At the adjourned annual meeting, on Monday evening, held at the chairman's office,there were present Messrs Beharrell, Wearing, and Wilson. It was resolved that Mr J. Lowthian Wilson be re-elected chairman of the Board for the ensuing year. Pibb in Piaxton Distbiot.—The fire referred to in Tuesday's issue destroyed the stable and granary of Mr J. Kinley, and not the house. The latter was with difficulty saved. The stable, it is said, was sot insured. The damage amounted to about £l3O.

ASHBUBTON MAGISTBArB'S CotTBT. —At this Court on Monday, a man named Goiman, who was arrested for assaulting a girl named Swan, by kissing her, was discharged, as it came out in evidence that the information was laid through ill-feeling having existed between the parents and accused, who were in partnership, and purely at the instigation of the parents. Mr Beetham sat on the Bench to-day for the purpose of hearing a case of alleged assault on the assistant-bailiff by a solicitor.

Ohoka Each Dinner. —On Monday evening a dinner was held at CHllow's Hotel, Ohoka, on the winding up of the races for the present season. Previous to sitting down a meeting of the stewards was held, Mr G-. Bailey, president, in the chair. It was resolved—"Thtt Mr McNaught's Bob-in be disqualified for the district race, as it was shown that he was not a district horse within the meaning of the regulations affecting that race a 3 drawn up by the committee." The stake in this race will, therefore, be paid to the second horse, Mr Beker's Moilk. About twenty sat down to the spread, which was a capital one. Mr Q. Bailey occupied the chair, and after the customary loyal toaßts the healths of "The Judge," responded to by Mr W. Buss, "The Stewards," by Mr Bailey, "The Handicappors," by Mr M. Jones, " The Treasurer," by Mr Isaac Waiting, " The Secretary," by Mr W. Taylor, were duly honored. Several other toasts were given and songs sung. A Cotjbt Scene.—A West Coast paper mentions a scene between Judge Weston and Mr South, Crown Prosecutor. The Crown Prosecutor asserted and reasserted that the Court was against him, and that he could not obtain an impartial trial in Beefton. In commenting on the above the " Inangahua Times" says:—"The proceedings throughout were as disgraceful as they were humiliating to the public mind. The demeanor of the Crown Prosecutor was one of studied and undisguised discourtesy to the Bench, and was carried to a length we have never before seen equalled in a Court of Jußtioe."

Medical Peaotitionees' Act. —On Saturday last (says the " Colonist") the Government again proceeded against Mr Wallace for practising in the Collingwood district as a medical practitioner, without being duly registered. The case was heard at Collingwood, and the defendant was fined £SO and costs. As on the occasion of the first prosecution of that gentleman in May last, the case created considerable interest in the district, and his friends are taking steps to find the wherewithal to pay the fine. A number of settlers, however, consider he has been justly punished.

Waihakaribi Habbob Boabd.—An adjourned meeting of this Board was held on Monday evening, at the Kaiapoi Borough Council Chamber. Present—Messrs Wearing (chairman), Denton, Moore, Beharrell, and Mathews. The secretary laid on the table a plan and estimate for pontoons, anchors, and gear to put the dredge into working order, which wore considered, and the Board, after passing routine business, adjourned. The Mails.—The Waitaki, with the inward San Francisco mail, is expected to leave Wellington at 11 a.m. to-day (Wednesday), to connect with express train from Christchurch for the South on Thursday morning. The outward English mail via Suez, is advertised to close at 7 a.m. on Thursday, and it is to be regretted that the latter could not be delayed a few hours, in order that replies might be sent to incoming correspondence.

The Riot Cases. —The trial of the Boxing Day rioters wag finished yesterday, all the prisoners, with the exception of Edward Murphy, being found guilty. His Honor, in passing sentence, said the evidence showed that four men, McAvey, Hanley, Ouddihy, and Barrett, had been most active in the riot, and theso he sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment with hard labour. The remainder were sontenced to twelve months. At its rising the Court adjourned till Thursday. Stack ITibe at Kimbbblby.—A large stack of hay, the property of Mr Hugh McClelland, of Kimberley, was burned to the ground on Saturday. It appears that one of Mr McOlelland'g ohildren, a boy about seven years of age, was playing with matches round the stack, and accidentally set fire to it. A strong nor* wester was blowing at the time. In addition to the hay, which wag uninsured, a new tarpaulin, valued at £lO, was destroyed.

Yesterday's Wbathbb.—The following telegrams were received yesterday by Messrs P. Cunningham and Co. : —" Rsngiora, 11.7 a.m. Raining very heavily here." "Timaru, 11 30 a.m. Weather dull, but no rain yet." " Ashburton, 11.45 a.m. Commenced to rain at 8 a.m. this morning ; weather looking dirty." " Oamaru, 12.5 p.m. Splendid sunshine last ten days. Bather cloudy to-day, but no rain."

Kaiapoi Eibb Bbioadb.—At a meeting held on Monday after prsotice, Mr Superintendent Smith was desired to represent this brigade at the conference of brigades to be held in Dunedin. Masonic—The installation of the W.M. of the St. Augnstine Lodge, No. 609, has been unavoidably postponed till Thursday, 22nd inst., at 6.30'p.m. Bible Christians —At the Congregational Church, Manchester street, on Thursday, a public tea will be held in connection with the reception of the Bev. J. Crewes. A public meeting will be held subsequently. Stbino Binder Trial.—A field trial of the Johnston string binder will take place on Friday at the farm of Mr John Overton, Prebbleton.
