AUCKLAND, January 9, The Pnkekoe and Wainku Line-

A deputation of Waiukn settlers waited on Mr Whitaker to urge the survey of the branch line from Pukekoo to Waiuku. The deputation stated that rough statistics would show that the lino would pay. Mr Whitaker said the Government would not construct any further lines in the present state of the finances of the colony. It was doubtful whether they could complete the lines undertaken. The Government would not take over any more branch lines. He asked the deputation to prepare statistics for the Minister of Works, who would shortly visit Auckland. The Brig ParaA letter from Kaipara states that the brig Para crossed the bar at 8 a.m. on 3rd January with signals flying for a pilot. At 9 a.m. the vessel was in difficulties, and anchored el se to the beach, not very far from the flag staff. At noon she began (o drag and grounded shortly afterwards. An inquiry into the circumstances connected with the Joss of a steerage passenger off the steamer Star of the South was held before the Collector of Customs to-day. The second mate stated that while on the watch late on Wednesday night he heard a splash in the water, and, looking over the side, could discover nothing. He did not hear cries. It is believed Crofton landed at Port Chalmers about twelve months ago, and that hia wife died at Oamaru in September last. The Waterworks Loan. The City Council received a letter from the Bank of New Zealand last night in refcrcice to the water works loan of £130,000, stating that the managing director was of opinion that the immediate appeal for funds eo soon after the allotment of the last loan would have a damaging < ff°ot. GREYMOUXH, January 9. Fire. A fire broke out at Orwell Creek at one o’clock on Thursday morning, in a kitchen attached to Gilmore’s Hotel. The hotel and bakery were destroyed, as were also Cressey's butcher’s shop and the dwelling house of Mr Maloney. None of the properly was saved. The whole was uninsured.
