Total 87 Melbourne, January 7. After a short adjournment yesterday the Mel* bourne men went in for their second innings, Alexander and Gibson starting to face the bowl* ing of Ashby and Lee. The Canterbury team were evidently suffering from the heat, and the bowling in consequence was not up to tbe mark, and although the fielding, with one or two exceptions, was good, Tennant and Kendall knocked the ball to all parts of the field, and toward the latter part of the innings especially made leather-hunting very fatiguing tor the visiting team. Great interest was taken in the match, and the attendance was large. The Melbourne men put together 236 before the last wicket fell, making thus a grand total of 379, and leaving the Canterbury men 293 to get to save defeat. The following are the scores:— MELBOURNE. 2nd Innings. Alexander, Ibw, b Lee 6 Gibson, c Fowler b Lee 19 McDonnel, cW.
