CHRISTCHURCH Tuesday, June" 4, [Before Major Lean, J.P.] DBUi^ENNEse. —Robert Francis Shannon, for using, while intoxicated, profane and obscene language, was fined 20s. A list of nineteen previous convictions recorded against him was handed to the Bench by Inspector Hickson. William Lambert was sent to prison for fourteen days. Mary Evans, alias Margaret Irvine, was charged with the wilful destruction of private property, value 7s 6d. When drunk she had fallen against and smashed the window of Mr Hislop’s shop in High street. She was fined 10s. Robert Myer, who pleaded the weather of Monday as an excuse for an extra glass, was fined 10s. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Wife Desertion. —Duncan McCallum was brought up on warrant from Temuka, on a charge of wife desertion. Prosecutrix deposed that he had left her seven weeks ago, without money and without bread. She had four children, the eldest being eight years old. Defendant said that he had no intention to desert his wife and children. He had left ou account of a quarrel caused by his mother-in-law. He was getting 2os a week, with board, as a laborer. Prosecutrix said she did not wish to live with defendant ; all she wanted was a maintenance for the children. Defendant said he had a place at Temuka to which to take his family. He was ordered to pay 17s Gd a week until he had his family with him. He was advised to take his children, when ho would not have to pay anything. Destitute Peksons Relief Act—Wm. Chauman was brought up on remand, and charged with failing to provide adequate means of support for his wife and child. ITo had been remanded on his promise to become a teetotaller. Ha produced a ticket of membership of the St. Patrick’s Abstinence Society, but, as it had no name upon it, he was ordered to atUnd again 10-morrt w, and then produce the ticket with his name upon it,
