MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, November 22. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.)

Drunk and Disorderly.— The following inebriates were sdealt with :—John Chubb, fined ss; Frederick Agisis, drunk and disorderly at Railway Station, 10s; Johann O’Connor, an old offender, 40s and cautioned; Joseph Pickett, ss; Jacob Cox, an old offender, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, wit lizard labour, and Alexander McKenzie was finfcd ss, Drunk and Using Obscene Language. —Jane McMahon, who had been several, times lately before the Court, was charged with being drunk and using obscene language in front of the Q.C.E. Hotel on Saturday night, and fined 40s. Vagrancy. —Peter Romulus, whom it was proved had been lying out in Hagley Park for some nights past, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, with hard labour.

Lunacy from Drink.— Reuben Cook, who was brought up suffering from the effects of drink, was remanded to Lyttelton for eight days. Neglected Children.— Charles Skelton, Ellen Skelton, and Elizabeth Skelton, three respectably dressed children, ranging from the ages cf seven to nine years, were brought up under the Neglected Children’s Act. William Skelton, the elder brother, about nineteen years of age, stated that their father had deserted them in June last. They had a stepmother but she could not maintain them nor was he in a position to do so. The boy was ordered to be sent to the Industrial School fur five years, and the girls for seven years each, all to be brought up in the teaching of the Church of England.

LYTTELTON. Saturday, November 20. (Before W. Donald, Esq, R.M )

Assault— Edward Williams was charged by Henry Phillips with this offence. Mr Nalder appeared for the complaintant, whose evidence went to show that the accused had assaulted him without the slightest provocation, kicking him when on the ground. The evidence of a witness named Nicholas Smith was also taken, and the Bench inflicted a fine of £2, Court costs 10s, witness ss, solicitor’s fee £1 Is. —Raynor, first officer of the brig Emperor, was charged by Robert West, a seam'an, with this offence. Mr Nalder appeared fur the accused. After hearing evidence on both sides, the Bench inflicted a fine of £2 and costs.

Civil Case Leslie V Mar'n; claim £3 10s, for board and lodging ; judgment by confession for full amount, and costs 11s.
