ROAD BOARDS.

HBATHOOTE. This Board held an adjourned meeting on Thursday evening last. Present—Messrs J. T. Fisher (chairman), W. Dunlop, Wm Attwood, and Wm. Mardon. The clerk re. ported that be had received—Ordinary road rates, £135 14s 3d ; Waimakariri, £lo*3s 9d ; on account from sale of survey instruments, £lO ; for clearing out creek, 12s ; from sale of earth, £l. Total, £156 10s. Correspondence was read from the Christchurch City Council, also from Mr Palairet, complaining of the bad state of the Slaughter-house road. To be informed the same will be attended to as soon as the weather permits. From Mr P. Kerr, being a long letter full of complaints in reference to road leading to his premises. Ordered that the letter be laid on the table. From Mr Cowlishaw, re notice to cut trees, askiDg the Board particulars, as he wished to know in what way they were obstructing the road. To be informed the Board consider all trees overhanging a road to be prejudicial thereto, and that he would receive a notice, when one of the members would meet him on the spot in reference to same. From the City Council, informing the Board that they will meet the chairmen of the Road Boards atj|a meeting of the drainage conference, to be held on Friday, as three o'clock, the 6th inst. Resolved, that the chairman meet the members appointed by the City Council for that purpose, and not the body as a whole. From Jno. Stewart, declining to pay rates for premises at the Valley. The clerk was instructed to write the Secretary of Public works enclosing copy of letter, and asking on what authority these people are occupying Government property at the valley, and not paying rates for same. From Mr Huddleston, offering to furnish plans of the most thickly populated districts. The Board thought it would like to have one asi a sample before accepting his offer for the lot. A petition was received from ratepayers at Woolston, asking that the footpath may be widened and put in better shape, and also the drainage improved. Deferred to next meeting. From Mr Hassal, requesting the formation of road leading from Opawa to the River Heathcote by his premises. Deferred till the locality has been visited by some of the members. From Mr J.A.Graham, complainingof Mr Ball again interfering with him in carrying out his contract re drainage with the Board. Resolved—" That Mr Garrick be further instructed in the matter." From Mrs Bradley, asking for a few loads of earth to fill up a hole full of stagnant water. Granted, if the foreman has it to spare. From Mr L. Harper, re cutting gorse fence ; also in reference to erection of shed and rope walk on a road not used in valley, informing the Board that the same was about to be used, and asking to have the obstructions removed. To be attended to. From the City Council, informing the Board of a resolution passed at their meeting, viz, " That the committee appointed re the suburban drainage be discharged ;" whereupon the members of the Board expressed their opinion, and thought it was strange conduct on the part of the City Council to appoint a committee to meet the chairmen of the Road Boards on this matter, and then when the work had proposed so far to try and throw them over by discharging the committee. A petition was received from Mr G. Clark and six others re drain on Piper's road. To be attended to. The foreman was directed to attend to the drainage between Dunsford's and McHutchenson's, Going's road. Complaints were made of persons removing clay from the Sumner road, near Mr Morton's. From Mr Morton, asking to have the road leading from the pilot house to his hotel formed. The Board agreed to inspect the same, and at the same time to see about the removal of clay. Resolved —" That tenders be called for supplying and carting 250 yards of screened metal for Ensor's road; also for 200 yards of broken metal for the Bridle path. The clerk was instructed to give gorse notices to those people whose fences were an obstruction to Wing's road. To write to the Government again about culvert at the valley. Also about specifications for improvements to the Sumner road, as the Board was anxious to have the work carried out before the heavier traffic set in, as nothing had been done. In reference to the roads in Phillip's Town, the Board came to the decision that in the present state of the same nothing could be done, but will be attended to as soon as possible. The chairman had enquired from the Government whether the Waltham streets on section 79 had been dedicated yet, and was informed in the negative. Messrs Tait, Austin, and Kirk, waited on the Board re forming and metalling Hills Road, from Colombo road to Stone Quarry brick and pipe works, informing the Board that the Government had offered to pay half the cost, Austin and Kirk offered to pay £SO and what pipes were required, if the Board would subscribe the balance, viz, £ 100, which would amount to the estimated cost of £3OO. The Board agreed to same on certain conditions. Mr Greengoe waited on the Board asking permission to form road along the River Heathcote, as he has a section between Wilson's bridge and Mr Hassall's property. Granted; but to be responsible for any encroachments on private property. Mr Courtenay and another waited on the Board re forming of footpath along the Ferry road by Davis's store. Agreed to, subject to the payment of the cost of same. Two tenders were then opened for supplying and carting 400 yards of broken metal for the Ferry road, and one accepted.
