BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Monday, Decembeb 21. The usual weekly meeting of the Board ■was held yesterday, at 3 p.m. PresentMessrs A, O. Knight, J. N. Tosswill, and G. Gould. THE CHAEBMANSHIP. Mr John Ihglis was elected as chairman of the Board vice Mr C. C. Bowen, resigned. : ' TEMUKA. A letter was read from the Temuka committee, enclosing a memorial from certain residents, requesting that Latin, Euclid, and Algebra, should be taught in the school, and recommending that the request of memorialists should be granted. The letter was referred to the inspector to report upon. ' EAST CHBISTCHUBCH. The chairman of the committee waited

He i. said the committee had obtained a report by which it was seen that two class-rooms and a layatoiy were recommended to be erected. MrHill recommended that the rooms Bhould be 26ft x 21ft each, and he would like to know if .'the Board approved of this before the committee called for tenders. The Board approved of the suggestions and empowered the committee to obtain plans and specifications and submit the same to the Board for their approval. '< A request from the committee for an increase of salary to Mr Hill was considered, but the Board resolved that they saw no reason to depart from the arrangement entered-into with Mr Hill. . 'A letter was read from Messrs Craig and Alport, auditors of the East ChristChurch district, asking for payment of ac-
count of £6 6s for services, and pointing out that there was no mention in the Ordinance of the onerous office of auditor being an honorary one. The Board, in reply to the committee on a former occasion, stated that they had no funds for this purpose. The secretary was instructed to reply that the board saw no reason to alter their former decision. The committee's action in securing St Luke's school was approved by the Board. PORT LEVY. A letter was read from Mr Fleming, stating that the one acre for school site had been given free of cost. The Board approved of the site; the secretary to communicate with Mr Fleming as to conveying the land to the Superintendent. WKST EYRETON. A letter was read from the committee, stating that an addition to the present site was necessary, and recommending the purchase of two acres of land at a price of £ls. The secretary was instructed to inquire whether a piece of land could not be obtained adjoining the school. MALVERN. A letter was read from the Malvern committee, askiug that a rate might be levied to provide for the new school buildings, plans and specifications for which were forwarded. The request was granted. OVERDRAFT ON MAINTENANCE. A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary, calling the attention of the Board to the overdraft on maintenance, and asking for an account of the same. The secretary was instructed to reply that a statement would at once be forwarded. RANGIORA. A letter was read from the local committee, informing the Board that Mr Chapman, head master, had resigned his position, and as Rangiora would shortly be erected into a borough, they asked that a master of the same attainments, and receiving the salary paid to the masters of the other borough schools, be appointed. The secretary was instructed to reply that the appointment of masters rested with the local committees, but that the inspector would confer with the committee on the subject. LYTTELTON. A letter was read from the Borough school committee, asking the sanction of the Board to the appointment of a caretaker at the new schools at a salary of 35s per we-.k, with house and fuel. The secretary was instructed to reply that the Board could not sanction a larger salary for a caretaker than £6O per annum. KAIAPOI ISLAND NORTH. A letter was read from the local committee, stating that they objected to the proposed alteration of boundaries as proposed by the creation of a new district. The Kaiapoi committee also wrote to the same effect. The Board decided that as the districts affected objected to the proposed alteration, they could not sanction the application. The question of the appointments of Mrs Soulsby and Miss Hookham as assistantmistresses, and Mr Fee as assistant-master, was deferred until reference had been made to the inspector. The committee further requested power to remove schoolroom No 1, and convert it into a custodian's house and committee-room, at a cost of £l4O. The Board decided to postpone tbe consideration of this question until after the meeting of the Council. ROBINSON'S BAY. A letter was read from the school committee, asking that a grant for furniture at Duvauchelle's Bay should be made, it only being able to accommodate twenty children, while thirty-eight were in attendance. The Board decided to grant the request, estimate of cost to be forwarded to the Board. PIGEON BAY. A letter was read.from the local committee, stating that the claim of Mr Mackay for extras in building the school-house had been investigated, and that £l4 10s had been awarded to him. The Board agreed to sanction the payment of the amount. YALDHURST. A letter was read from the committee, forwarding plans for erection of master's house. The secretary was instructed to reply that the matter could not be decided until the site was conveyed to the Superintendent. HALKETT. A letter was read from Captain Halkett, Btating that he was willing to transfer an additional acre of land for the school site as a gift. The Board accepted the offer with thanks, and the secretary was instructed to ask Captain Halkett to forward the deeds of the section to the Provincial solicitor, the Government paying costs of transfer. DRILL INSTRUCTOR'S REPORT. The quarterly report by Mr J. Q. Walker, the drill inspector, was read and approved. The Board then adjourned.
