BOARD OF EDUCATION.
0 Monday, December 14. The usual weekly meeting of the Board was held at 3 p.m. Present—Messrs Inglis (in the chair), Gould, and Maude. The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed. BICCARTON. A letter was read from the chairman of the local committee, recommending the erection of a side school at Prebbleton. The matter was postponed until next meeting. LOWER HEATHCOTE. The chairman of the local committee, Mr Bamford, waited on the Board, and submitted plans of proposed additions to the . schoolroom. After considering the plans, the Board informed Mr Bamford that an answer would be forwarded in due course. TAX TAPU. A deputation from the Tai Tapu local committee waited upon the Board with respect, to the purchase of an additional two acres of ground as a play ground for the children. The present site, it was pointed out, was only one acre, and the greater portion of that had been taken up by the planting which had been carried on, so that really there was little or no space left for the play ground. The deputation were informed that an answer would be forwarded to them. APPLICATION FOR GRANTS. The chairman stated that the Board had had before them several applications for grants for buildings and sites which had been left over from last week in order that the Board might ascertain the amount of funds at its disposal, and the secretary had been requested to prepare a statement of the expenditure of the appropriations of the Provincial Council, and the liabilities of the Board. The secretary submitted a statement, which was discussed by the Board. Ultimately it was resolved to postpone all applications for grants of money until next meeting. THE CHAIRMANSHIP. The election of a chairman of the Board in place of Mr C, C. Bowen resigned, was deferred until next week, the secretary to gtve notice to the members of the Board of the same, and also of the discussion of the alteration of the day of meeting. INSPECTION OF SCHOOLS. The inspector of schools reported that owing to a large number of schools requring to be examined before Christmas, he found that there was by far too much for himself and Mr Hammond to manage, and he would therefore ask that Mr Watkins, one of the English masters, should be allowed to assist them. The Board granted the request. LINCOLN. A letter was'read from the local committee, asking permission to purchase three acres of land from the Lincoln Fair Company at £7O per acre. The secretary was instructed to reply that the Board have no funds at present, and that they cannot recommend the purchase to the Government at the price stated. TIMARU. A letter was read from the local committee, asking the Board to sanction the acceptance of a tender for £1129 for the erection of the head master’s house ; also stating that the reason of the bank overdraft was that in carrying on the erection of a large building such as the Timaru school it was impossible to defer payments until vouchers could be passed in Christchurch, and further that the chairman of the late committee had to secure the land for the school site. The writer also applied for an increase of salary to Miss Forbes and Miss Griffin. As regarded the tender for the head master’s house, that was approved, and the question of increase of salary to Miss Forbes and Miss Griffin was ordered to stand over. EMPLOYMENT OF TEACHERS. The following letter from the Victorian Board of Education relative to the employment of teachers was read : “ Education Department, “Melbourne, Nov 17, 1874. “ Sir, —It sometimes happens that teachers who are, or have been, employed in other Australian colonies apply for appointment here, or vice versa, and I think it would be desirable that a mutual understanding should be arrived at not to make appointments in such cases without first ascertaining the character of the applicants, and whether any objection exists, as, for instance, an applicant having been trained at the expense of the department of one colony and not having, subsequently, served the stipulated time (in Victoria this time is four years), or any other objection whatever. “ I shall feel obliged by being favored with your views on the subjects. “I have the honor to be, Sir, “Your most obedient servant, “Henry Venables, Secretary. “The Secretary Board of Education, “ Canterbury, New Zealand.” The letter was referred to the Board of Examiners for their report thereon. WOODEND. A letter was readjfrom the local committee, asking for authority to carry out certain repairs and alterations to the master’s house, at a cost of £lO7. The application was postponed. SOUTH RAKAIA. A letter was read from the local committee, enclosing letter from the master with reference to the report on the school. CHRISTCHURCH EAST, A letter was read from the local committee, stating that they had made arrangements with Mr Wilkin to keep his offer of land on the South town belt open until the meeting of the Provincial Council, CARLETON, A letterwas read from the local committee, enclosing plans, specifications, and estimates, for the erection of a master’s house. The secretary was instructed to forward copies of the plans and specifications adopted by the Board, with a request that they would get an estimate of the cost of carrying out the same. YALDHUEST. A letterwas read from the local committee, stating that they had an offer of a cheaper site for the school. GERALDINE. A letter was read from the local committee, recommending the appointment of Miss Louisa Bartram as assistant mistress. On the recommendation of the inspector the Board confirmed the appointment, PIGEON BAY. A letter was read from the local committee, stating that the site for the school had been conveyed to the Superintendent, and asking for authority to make certain advances.
Tbe consideration of this letter was deferred. LOWER HEATHCOTE, A letter was read from the Lower Heathcote school committee, stating that there were no children under five years of age attending the Lower Heathcote school. Another letter was read from the same committee, asking for an increase of salary to Miss Taylor, the assistant mistress of the school. The matter was postponed until next meeting. WAIMATE. A letter was read from the district school committee, asking that the Board would supplement the published scale of salaries for an assistant mistress, as it was necessary that an increase should be made in the teaching staff. The consideration of the application was postponed. GERMAN BAY. A petition was read from certain residents of German Bay respecting the establishment of a side school. The Board decided that they were not prepared to consider the matter. HEATHCOTE VALLEY. A letter was read fronrthe local committee, asking that certain repairs should be done to the school. The consideration of this matter was deferred for a week. MASTERSHIP. A letter was read from Mr E. Watkins, asking employment as assistant master. As temporary employment had already been found for Mr Watkins, the matter was deferred;
