MR GEE IN EXPLANATION.
To the Editor of the Globe. Sir,—Will you kindly allow me space in your columns to reply to a statement made by Mr Joynt, while supporting Mr Boot's application for a wine and beer license, before the Licensing Commissioners yesterday. Mr Joynt is reported in your paper to have said that "Mr Gee had a place of this kind in Colombo street, but he (Mr Joynt) had been informed that as many gentlemen lunched there, and he had no private room, ladies felt a diffidence in going into Mr Gee's shop." I regret that Mr Joynt should have made these remarks, so calculated to injure my business, without first ascertaining the truth of them. Mr Joynt must know, that under the Ordinance, I am compelled to keep a room specially for ladies, and the clause bearing on that is fully carried out by me, as I have a room off the shop, into which ladies coming to lunch are invited, and in proof of this assertion, I may state that Mr Inspector Buckley visited my premises a fortnight ago, and expressed himself perfectly satisfied with the provision made for ladies. In conclusion, I beg to state that for fully two-thirds of my retail trade I am indebted to the ladies of Christchurch and the surrounding districts, I hope, therefore, Mr Joynt will see fit to retract these uncalled for and injurious remarks concerning my business. Yours, &c, ALFRED GEE, Confectioner, Colombo street.
