THE C. J. C. AND THE AUTUMN MEETING.
To the Editor of the Qlobe. Sib,—Allow me, before it is too late, to draw the attention of the Canterbury Jockey Club to the serious inconvenience that will arise to the general public if the Autumn meeting is to take place on the two last days of the week. Saturday is the very worst day in the week for collecting a good attendance on the race course, and just let me enumerate the sections of the community who will be unable to attend on that day. The club cannot expect that the auctioneers, publicans, drapers, or grocers, can leave their different occupations on the busiest day of the week ; fond as they may be of a day's racing, they cannot afford to neglect their business to the extent necessary. Then again, look at the Jewish portion of the community, who will be prevented from attending on Saturday. These gentlemen represent a very numerous body, and it is sincerely to be hoped that an effort will be made to induce the Jockey Club to fix the days for the forthcoming Autumn meeting on a Thursday and Friday, instead of as at present. I trust some abler pens than mine will take up the subject, but meanwhile, I am, Yours, &c, PUBLICAN. Christchurch, December Ist.
