NEWS OF THE DAY.
Parish of Kaiapoi.—The Rev W. W. Willock, for many years past in charge ot this parish, is understood to have given intimation of his resignation. Large Flying Fish. —We were showi to-day the wings of a flying fish caught ii lat 34 deg S., long 18 W., on board the barqin Ardour. It measured 27 inches across th wings and 21 inches from the tail to tb< snout, and weighed lib Hozs.
Madame Goddaud's Concert.—lt is hardly necessary to remind our readers that Madame Arabella Goddard's first concert in Christchurch will be given at the Oddfellows' Hall this evening, when, judging from the number of seats engaged, a large and fashiouable attendance may be expected. ARRIVAL. —Mr P. Cunningham arrived in the Alhambra this morning, and quite a crowd assembled to meet him. Lyttelton was quite gay with flags in his honor, and were many of the ships. The Elizabeth Graham was particularly brilliant in this respect. It must be gratilving to that gen•iTnan to be received so warmly after his absence. St Michael's Church Fund.—A meeting of the committee appointed to obtain subscriptions for the purpose of building the chancel and organ chamber at St Michael's was held at the school room yesterday afternoon. The parish was divided into districts, and collectors appointed to each. About £6OO is now required to make up the amount necessary to defray the cost of the building, which is estimated to cost about £BOO. As an energetic canvass is in course of being mode the sum required will doubtless speedily be obtained. The Chairmanship of the Board of Education. —At the usual weekly meeting of the Board of Education, held yesterday, the Board agreed to a resolution expressive of their high appreciation of the services rendered to the cause of education in the province generally by Mr C. C. Bowen, who has resigned the office of chairman, which he has held since the retirement of Mr W. Montgomery. A special meeting of the Board for the election of a chairman will be held on Monday next.
