SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
HALSWELL.
The annual meeting: of the bondholders Was held on Monday last. Mr John Milo occupied the chair. He read the report of the outgoing committee as follows “ Your committee have to state that nine members of the committee were elected at the last annual meeting, but that one of the member’s seats (Mr Ward) became vacant through non-attendance. The committee elected Mr John F. Lincoln in hie stead, but he declined to act, and being near the end of the year, your committee deemed it unnecessary to nominate another. In consequence of a change of master having taken place last October, the school fell away somewhat in general efficiency, but the committee are of opinion that the children are progressing very fairly under their new master, and will in a short time obtain a much higher state of proficiency in the various subjects taught. “ The number of attendants on the register is 93 for the last quarter ending September 30th, 1874, the average attendance 61, a slight decrease on the previous quarter, which was 98 on the register, and average attendance 61. The decrease is attributed to the very wet weather prevailing for some time past. In consequence of the crowded state of the school, the committee have taken steps to have the school enlarged, and obtained the sanction of the Board of Education, so it will be one of the objects the committee about to be elected will have to fulfil. A cooking range for the master’s house, and a register grate for the school, obtained at a cost of £ls, are the only improvements during the year. You will see by the statement of accounts laid before you duly audited, that the total receipts, including the balance from last year, were £3lB lls Id, and disbursements £239 18s 6d, leaving a balance in hand of £7B 12s 7d. The amount of rates collected to the 30th of September was £BS, and the amount outstanding, £26 10s. In conclusion, your committee trust that they have merited the confidence of the householders. and that a good working committee will be elected for the ensuing year.” A deal of discussion about the efficiency of the present master, and the mode of discipline adopted by him, was indulged in, but no definite motion being brought before the meeting, it was moved by Mr H. Leaf ham, seconded by Mr G. Going, “ That the report be adopted.” Carried.
