NEWS OF THE DAY.
Merivale Entertainment.— An entertainment will take place at Merivale '.tomorrow evening. The programme consists of two parts, in the first of which Madame and Miss Winter will sing several pieces, and in the second the members of the Avonside Dramatic Club will appear. Testimonial. —On Saturday evening the employees of Mr W. Wilson presented Mr Duncan B. McLaren with a silver inkstand and penoilcase, on the occasion of his leaving his present employment. The inkstand bore the following inscription : —“ Duncan B. McLaren, from the employees of W. Wilson, on his leaving, October, 1874.” The San FRANcisco Mail.— The p.s, Luna, with the San Francisco Mail, arrived in harbour about 9.30 a.m. this morning, and left after a short stay of less than an hour for Dunedin. She brings thirty bags for this port, twenty-seven for Christchurch, and three for Lyttelton. They were forwarded up to Christchurch by the 11 a.m. train.
Benevolent. A workman of Messrs Hawkins and Co, contractors for the Lyttelton breakwater, had the misfortune, three months ago, to suffer from a weakness of sight. Since then he has been gradually getting worse, and the doctors advised his proceeding to Melbourne, to procure the professional aid of one of those gentlemen who have entirely devoted themselves to this branch of the profession. A subscription was raised amongst his fellow workmen, headtd by his employers, for the purpose, amounting to nearly £27, and he will proceed by the Gothenburg. Holy Trinity Church, Lyttelton.— The monthly vestry meeting was held on Friday evening. Present —Rev F, Pember (in the chair), Dr Rouse, Messrs H. R. Webb, R. Cotton, W. Graham, and G. N. Phillips. Mr Graham brought up plans and report as to the funds available towards the erection of a mortuary chapel. It was resolved to invite the parishioners, by circular, to supplement the sum in hand by their subscriptions, A memorandum from the church steward relative to title deeds of church property in Lyttelton was algo brought up by Mr Graham, who was authorised to act on behalf of the vestry in the matter'. After the transaction of some further business, the vestry adjourned. Found Drowned. The body of an elderly man, who is unknown, was found yesterday morning by Constable Davis, in the river Heathcote, near Wilson’s bridge. The tide was low at the time, and the body, when found, was face down in about eighteen inches of water. The deceased”was an elderly man between sixty and seventy years of age, with grey hair and whiskers, and when taken out of the river, three £1 notes, two half sovereigns, some silver and copp°rs, pocket knife, handkerchief, and a small roll of new serge, were found in his pockets. He was dressed in a long fustian coat with brass buttons, dark tweed trousers, light vest, and water-tight boots, but had no hat on. The body was removed to the Waltham Arms Hotel, where it awaits identification. Summary—Male adults, 111 ; female adults, 116 ; male children, 57 ; female children, 39 ; infants, 14 ; total, 337, equal to 275 statute adults. St Michael’s Chancel Fund. —The offertories yesterday, at St Michael’s and All Angels’, were set apart to augment the fund now being raised for the purpose of erecting the chance], vestry, and organ chamber in connection with this church, and realised £4l 13s Bd—a goodly sum—but still not so much as might have been expected, c®nsicjering the object, together with the fact that the parish of St Michael’s is looked upon as the wealthiest in the diocese. We would earnestly remind all those who take an interest in the mother Church of Canterbury, that a large amount is still required to make up the amount of the accepted tender, and to those who would wish to aid in this gnod work, we may mention that the incumbent and churchwardens will be happy to receive any contributions towards the Chancel Fund. The tender, having been signed, and nearly all the requisite timber on the ground, the buildings will be proceeded with without delay, and it is expected that they will be finished in about four months from date.
School Committees. —We remind all ratepayers and others interested in the matter of education that the annual meetings for the election of school committees and auditors for the ensuing year, take place this evening. The town meetings will be held as under:—East Christchurch, Oddfellows Hall ; West Christchurch, Lincoln road schoolroom. The other meetings in the suburban and country districts will take place in the respective district schoolrooms.
