THE CITY COUNCIL.
To the Editor of the Globe.
SIR, —I am extremely glad to see that you have called the attention of the public in general, and the City Council of Christchurch in particular, to a most important matter, viz : the packing together of fatuities in some of the miserable hovels in this city. It is quite likely that the City Council may object to your speaking, or rather writing out, your mind upon the subject. Never heed them. Mr Editor, you have given your ideas upon a matter which they should have looked to long ago, and you deserve the thanks of the community for doing so, notwithstanding anything some members of the Council may say to the contrary ; and I trust ttat, having put your hand to the plough, you will not draw back, but push the matter, and insist upon the Council’s setting it to rights. Councillor Tck is no doubt very wrath, and endeavors to make the public believe that you do not know what you are writing about, but I can assure Councillor Ick, and I can also tell you, Mr Editor, that your remarks are not only true, but I can testify by personal experience, that such cases as you mention, may be seen every day, if any person only takes the trouble to walk round, and through the city. If Councillor Ick and those gentlemen in the Council who are so fond of having their sweet voices heard upon “ points of order,” and as to whether a “ hoarding ” should be removed, and a “ link ” added to the Mayor’s chain, would only pay a little more attention to what deeply concerns the public, viz, the health of the citizens, I think they would not only contribute more to the public weal, but they would be much more likely to gain the respect, esteem, and the cordial support of the ratepayers. —Yours, &c, RATEPAYER, September 30th, 1874.
THE CITY COUNCIL.
