Theatre Royal.—The attendance at the Theatre Royal last evening was somewhat limited, Kotzebue's dismal play of ' The Stranger" was the first piece, but beyond Mrs Hill as Mrs Haller, Mr Steele as the Stranger, and Mr Musgrave as Solomon, the various representatives of the different characters of the piece appeared to have little or no conception of their parts, and the result was, the principal characters being unsupported, that the piece dragged terribly. Mrs Hill played Mrs Haller well throughout, and the same may be said of Mr Steele's rendering of the difficult part of the Stranger. A hornpipe, well danced by Miss Ettie Martineau, and the farce of " The Absent Man," concluded the performance at a late hour. To-night " The Octoroon " will be performed. Lyttelton Colonists' Society.—A committee meeting of this society was held on Thursday. Present: Messrs R. H. Webb (in the chair), Fyfe, Plimmer, Phillips, Weybourue, Allwright, and Rich (secretary.) The secretary stated that he had applied to the Provincial Government for a portion of the grant to libraries, but had received no reply, and the president was requested to see to the matter. In reply to an application from Mr Packard, secretary to the Hart fund, for a remission of the charge for the use of the hall, it was resolved to make the same charge as for other charitable purposes. Several new books were ordered to be purchased, and it was resolved to subscribe for the new work about to be published by Mr C. D. Barraud of Wellington. The question of the catalogue was also considered, and Mr Phillip's undertook to prepare one. After making the necessary arrangements for the annual meeting in October, the committee adjourned. Leithfield Cricket Club.—A meeting of the members of this club was held at Baldwin's Royal Hotel, on Monday evening. Nine members were present, Mr L. C. Williams in the chair. A draft copy of lease proposed to be made between the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company and the club, for leasing a paddock in the vicinity of the township, was submitted. After a slight discussion, it was resolved on the motion of Mr Ensor, seconded by Mr King, that the hon secretary write to the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, with a view to modifying the terms of the lease, and instead of the club being required to plant a belt of trees round the section, they be only required to plant one row and fence it, also that on the expiring of three years should the company wish to determine the lease, the club be allowed a sum of £25 for improvements, as the present conditions required the club to incur greater expense than they would get an equivalent for in that time. This concluded the business of the meeting, which was then adjourned till a reply is received. Some experiments have been made by M. S. A. Kosloff, in the presence of Sir C.
