TEMPLETON.
The Board met at the office, the Talbot, Yaldhurst, on Monday, July Oth. Present— The Chairman, Messrs Bailey, Carpenter, and Hepworth. A letter was received from Mr Meshbourne, tendering his resignation as a member of the Board. It was resolved that Mr Flcshbourne’s resignation be accepted, A letter was received from the Secretary for Public Works, authorising the Board to erect two immigrants’ cottages, and requesting to be advised of the tender they would wish to be accepted, and the site of reserve they consider most appropriate. The Board having opened the various tenders, one was accepted, subject to the approval of the Government, and the surveyor was directed to” ascertain from the contractor the extra cost of sinking a well, and forward the tender to the Government; also, to state that the most appropriate site would be at the Pound, Yaldhurst, and at the Railway Station, Templeton. A letter was received from Mr J. L, Wilson, of the new mill at Upper Riccarton, asking permission to put a notice board of the mill on the finger-post at Riccarton Church, The surveyor was directed to write to Mr Wilson, and inform him that the Board did not think it advisable to grant his request. A letter was read from the Rev W. E. Paige, incumbent of Templeton, asking leave to cart some gravel out of a pit in the river bed, for concrete for a new church at the Factory. The surveyor was directed to write and forward the permission required. Several tenders for the Station road were then opened, and one in each contract accepted. The surveyor having submitted the new seal ordered by the Board, it was resolved : “ That the same be approved of and be the corporate seal of the Board.” The surveyor was directed to call for fresh tenders for Maddison’s road ; the contractor, J. Fitzpatrick, having failed to commence. Also, to wiitc to the Secretary for Public Works, and ask for information as to the grants given by Government towards fencing and planting gravel reserves ; also, to inform Mr, Kelly that his road rate would be remitted on account of his age and poverty. The Board then proceeded to open applications for the office of clerk and surveyor. There were twelve applications, and after examining the various testimonials as to the fitness of the candidates, the Board appointed Mr F. G, Craddock to the office. _ The surveyor was directed to write and inform Mr Craddock, and direct him to have his surety bonds prepared by the next meeting. Also, to have the Board’s accounts audited by the Provincial auditor, and have everything ready for his successor at the next meeting of the Board.
The surveyor was also directed to have the district map lithographed to a scale of 20 chains to the inch, to agree with those already done' in the Leeston, Springs, and Lincoln districts, showing the|various|schools, churches, mileage, &c., or any objects of note throughout the district. The chairman was requested to call a meeting of ratepayerson Monday, August 3rd, to elect a member of the Hoard vice Mr Fleshbourne, resigned. The pay sheet, amounting to £G9 19s 6d, having been adopted and passed. The Board then adjourned till after the ratepayers’ meeting on August 3rd.
ELLESMERE. The election of a member to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr Filzroy was held at the Road Board office, Lccsto'u, on Ist inst, Mr <J. J. Bridge acting as returning officer. The following candidates were nominated, viz Mr John McLachlan, proposed by Mr D. Marshall, seconded by Mr E.A. McLachlan. Mr T. Acland, proposed by Mr T. 11. Dodd, seconded by Mr 0. F. Williams. Mr Hugh Knyvett, proposed by Mr W. D. Lawrence, seconded by Air John McKee. Mr 0. proposed by MrM. Cryer, seconded by Mr H. Knyvett. A show of hands was then taken with the following results : Mr John McLachlan, 5 ; Mr T. Acland, 6 ; Mr H. Knyvett, 8 , Mr C. F. Barker, 3, Immediately after the nomination was concluded, the Returning Officer proceeded to take the poll, when votes were recorded in a very spirited manner, as considerable interest was shewn in the contest, electors mustering strong from all parts of the district for the support of their respective candidates. At five o’clock the Returning Officer declared the result of the poll to be as follows: Mr H. Knyvett ... ... 124 Mr F, Acland ... ... ... 7G Mr C. F. Barker 04 Mr J. McLachlan ... ... 28 The declaration was received with cheering, and Mr H. Knyvett addressed the assemblage, thanked those electors who had honored him with their votes, and promised to use his utmost endeavors to further the interests of the district; and considering that the member in whoso place he bad been elected belonged to the same localities as himself, be thought it was only right, as all the other parts of the district were represented on the Board, that he should have been returned, which appeared by the result to have been likewise the opinion of the electors. A vote of thanks to the Returning Officer was then unanimously accorded, A meeting of the Ellesmere Road Board was held at the Road Board office, Leestou, July Ist, 1874. Present—Messrs C, J. Bridge (chairman), T. Rennie, and J. G. Lockhoad. Messrs. Dodd and Williams appeared before the Board asking for certain work to be done on the road drain between their sections. The Board undertook to carry out the work applied for on the usual terms, at the proper season of the year. Mr McLachlan complained that the terras required of him by the Board towards the cleaning of the drain in front of his land, was in excess of the usual terms granted by the Board. The Board decided to consider the work already done by Mr McLachlan as sufficient for his contribution towards the cost of work.
