MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, July 8. [Before C, 0. Bowen, Esq., R.M.] DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. Wm H. Derry, arrested by Constable Smith, was lined 20s or 48 hours. Amelia Whale, arrested by Constable Emson, was lined 20s and cab hire. Peter Romelas, alias Charles Brown, arrested by Sergeant Wilson, was fined 20s or 48 hours. Danl T. M‘Alpine, arrested by Constable Beck for drunkenness and breaking a pane of glass in a shop window, was fined 10s for being drunk, and advised to pay for the damage he had done. John Lane, arrested by Constable Beck for drunkenness, and who had been admitted to bail, did not appear when called. His Worship ordered a notice to issue to show cause why his recognizances should not be estreated.
LYTTELTON. Monday, July 6. [Before W. Donald, Esq,, R.M.] DRUNK AND INCAPABLE. John Anderson, a seaman, arrested by Constable Wallace, charged with this offence, was fined 10s, and in default 48 hours' imprisonment. DRUNKENNESS, W. H. Jones and Thos Hildon, arrested bj Constable Wallace, was charged with the foregoing offence. The former was dismissed with a caution, and the latter fined ss. VAGRANCY. James Harding, arrested by Constable Wallace, was sentenced to 48 hours' imprisonment, and duly cautioned as to his future conduct. LUNACY, Abednigo Savage was upon the certificates of Drs House and McDonald sent to the Lunatic Asylum for treatment. ASSAULT. William Munro was charged by H. Lawson with the above offence, and after hearing the evidence the Bench dismissed the case. ASSAULT WITH INTENT TO DO BODILY HARM. William Pollock was charged with having violently assaulted Mr Rowe, third officer of the ship Varuua. Mr H. N. Nalder appeared for complainant, The Bench after hearing the evidence, committed the prisoner for trial. Tuesday, July 7. [Before W; Donald, Esq., R.M., and Adam Chalmers, Esq , Mayor,] DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. William Barrie, arrested by Constable O’Shannassy, charged with an offence of this nature, was fined ss. REFUSAL OF DUTY. Joseph Thompson, cook on board the ship Stouchouse, was charged with this offence, and sentenced to one week’s imprisonment with hard labour. CHIMNEY ON FIRE. George Smith was charged with neglecting to keep the chimney of a house in his occupation clean, and in consequence of such neglect the chimney was on fire on Sunday, 21st June. Accused admitted the charge, and was fined 10s and costs. ABUSIVE AND INSULTING LANGUAGE ON RAILWAY PREMISES. John Hutchinson was charged, upon the information of Mr T. Wyman, storeman on the Lyttelton Railway, with this offence and fined 10s and costs. DESTROYING PRIVATE PROPERTY. William Woods was charged by Mrs Ann Fitzsimmons with this offence. The case was further adjourned for a week. KAIAPOI. Monday, July 6. [Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M.] BREACH OP RAILWAY ACT. Thomas Bird, for committing a nuisance ont of a railway carriage, was fined 20s and costs. MARRIED WOMEN’S PROTECTION ACT. Mrs Donaldson applied to have her earnings protected. She said her husband had deserted and left her on her own rewurces. Order made as prayed. SLAUGHTERHOUSE ORDINANCE. A license under this Ordinance was granted to G. Clist, Ohoka. CIVIL CASES. Superintendent by Collector of Kaiapoi Education rate v J. M. Bourne—Claim £l. Defendant had paid the rate before the summons was served, and disputed the costs, and said he had previously called to pay the amount at the collector’s office, but did not find him there. Judgment was given for plaintiff for the costs as defendant could not show that he had called to pay the rate before the time in the notice had lapsed. Same v C. Donovan, Temuka.—Claim £1 15s. No appearance of defendant; judgment for plaintiff for amount and costs. Same vJ, Heighland—Claim £2. Judgment for plaintiff by consent; two months allowed in which to pay claim. Same rR. W. Ferguson—Claim £1 12s. Judgment for plaintiff for amount and costs. Same vW. Allen— Claim £2 2s. Defendant said he was not in the Kaiapoi educational district. Adjourned, Hansen v Hararaona—Claim £7 7s. Judgment for plaintiff by consent, R. Hanna and Co v H Reeves—Claim £2l 17s Bd. Adjourned.
