Messrs H. Matson and Co. report on the live-stock market as follows : —At the yards on Wednesday last, 106 head of cattle and 2085 sheep were, brought forward for the week’s supply. In cattle our entries comprised 87 head on account of various owners, and we succeeded in disposing of 68 head, at —for yearlings, £1 17s 6d to £2 each ; two-year-old, £2 10s to* £8 5s per head ; milch cows, superior, £5 10s to £11; inferior, £2 to £3 5s per head. Fat cattle: Only a few came to hand. We sold at from £4 10s, £5, to £7 10s per head ; about equal to la»t week’s quotations. In reference to beef, we have to reiterate our remarks of last week, viz,, this low price is caused in a measure by the low rates at present ruling in the retail trade through the great facilities offered by the meat companies ; but as soon as these establishments close for the season, and the effects of winter are more keenly felt, we look for a considerable rise in values. The large number of fat cattle converted this season by the preserving establishments, together with the increased local consumption, must have reduced our supply of fat stock considerably, therefore we look forward with every confidence to receiving high rates for both fat cattle and fat sheep towards the end of winter and early spring. In sheep, we disposed of the following at the yards—6s merino wethers, at 10s per head ; 70 crossbred wethers, at 15s ; 130 cross-bred ewes, at 14s to 14s 6d, for Mr Charles Hurst, South bridge ; 343 cross-bred ewes, at 13s, for Mr W. M. Eoss, Kaiapoi Island ; 24 merino wethers, at 12s 6d ; 84 cross-bred wethers, at 15s, for Mr Richard Wright, Lincoln ; 100 merino ewes and wethers, at 7s 3d to 7s 9d per head, for Mr M. Weir ; 249 cull ewes, at 2s per head ; 220 lambs, at 5s 9d, for Mr Smart ; total sales by us 1285. Mutton realised 2»d, 2Jd, to 3d per lb. Wool, Skins, and Hides—No \vool was offered. A good supply of sheepskins came to hand, as also several casks of tallow and a large number of hides. Neither of the latter lines were disposed of. The lack of competition for hides, as also for tallow, at the auction sales is surprising. The highest offers received for best salted hides being 4ld per lb ; green do, 3s-d per lb ; best beef and mutton tallow, 2-}d per lb. Best butchers’ cross-bred skins brought from 5s 2d to 5s 3d each ; merino do, 3s 6d to 4s 9d each ; fullwoolled merino skins, 6s lOd ; pelts, 9d to Is 8d ; lambskins, from 3s to 3s 3d each. In landed properties we have sold three-quarter-acre section, corner of Manchester and Tuam streets, Christchurch, for £2OOO cash.
