Mr Small and the Sea Serpent.— We take the following from the “ Otago Daily Times ” —Mr Small has brought over in the barque Hadda, from Hong Kong, a veritable sea snake. It measures four feet in length and is in a good state of preservation. The way it was caught was somewhat singular. It appears that Mr Small had a line hanging out at the stern of the ship, when, by some means or other, the snake got entangled in the line and literally tied itself up in the cord, and was eventually landed on board. The capture was effected in lat 9.46 S, and long 136,46 B, on Saturday January 17th, of the present year. Mr Small was offered 25 dollars in Hong Kong for this marine curiosity, but declined to part with it, in order to present it to the Museum in this city. Championship of the Thames.—London, April 17th)—The race for the championship of the Thames between J. Sadler, of London, and Bagnall, of Newcastle, was rowed from Putney to Mortlake yesterday, and resulted in a victory for the London rower.
