MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, June 10. [Before C. G. Bowen, Esq., R.M.] DRUNK AND DISORDERLY.
Julia Mahoney, on remand for this offence, was again brought up, His Worship told the accused that he had made some enquiries about her, and he had learnt that she was a disgrace to herself, pawning all her husband’s clothes, and neglecting her family. He thought her husband ought to obtain a Judge’s order to have her placed in the Inebriates’ Asylum. His Worship then directed Mahoney (who was in Court) to apply to the Judge in Chambers for an order to have his wife placed in the inebriate’s ward, and stated that he would remand the accused, formally, until tomorrow. George Stevens, arrested by Sergeant Wilson for drunkenness, was fined 40s or ninetysix hours’ in default, aud severely cautioned against appearing in Court again. DRUNK AND ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES. 'Thomas Upton was arrested by Sergeant Wilson for being illegally on the premises of Mr Bennett, boarding-house keeper, Manchester street. A further charge of assaulting Mr Upton was preferred against him. Constable Beck stated that he arrested the accused at a quarter-past eleven the previous night for being illegally on Mr Upton’s premises, and for kicking that person. Mr Upton deposed to the prisoner being on his premises at the hour stated. After he had spoken to him, the prisoner kicked him violently, and he was still suffering from the effects of the kick he had received. The accused in defence said that he was drunk aud know nothing about it, Ilis Worship told him that there were three previous convictions against him, and being drunk was no excuse whatever. He (accused) had also kicked the prosecutor most viciously, aud a stop must be put to such ruffianly conduct. He would be sentenced to two mouths’ imprisonment, with hard labor.
LYTTELTON. Wednesday, June 10. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M,] BROACHING CARGO.
George Cracknell, George Deans, AB’s, Ernest Hattensaur, sail maker, on board tbe ship Veruua, were charged with this offence. Mr H. N. Nalder appeared for Captain Rowe.
The Bench, after hearing the evidence, adjourned the case for the production of a witness on board the ship.
