Jackio Dunn of England, world’s freo style figure skating champion, steps it up as lie practises his jumps .and whirls for winter competitions in United States and Canada. Dunn recently made liis debut in motion pictures.

People in the crofting township ol Blarmacliloldacli, near Fort William, Inverness-shire, brought in their New Y'ear at midnight on January 11. They do not observe the first day of January as an occasion for celebration, but from time immemorial they have celebrated the Now Tear on January 12. The report of the deputy Mayor, Or. H. Holmes, amli the town clerk, Mr \V. M. Jenkins, the Gisborne Jforoiigh Council delegates to the municipal conference in Timaru was presented to the Horough Council last evening, and details were also given of the principal remits carried. The Mayor. Air. 1). W. <Joleir.au, M.P.. said that the most important item so lar as the council was concerned was contained in the folowing extract from the delegates' report: “The conference was addressed by Mr. Hammond, technical adviser to the Housing Department, on the subject of bousing surveys to bo undertaken by the local authorities. Mr. Hammond stressed the necessity for local bodies to complete the survey of their respective districts as early as possible. A number of local authorities had made application to flic department for authority to make a detailed survey over a defined area only. It was not the intention of Lho department to grant such authority; only * in. exceptional cases. What was required is a survey of the whole borough, but such survey need only include a detailed survey of: those dwellings which are definitely bei'ow the standard set by the department. The survey required to be completed on or before Jql.Y, 31, 1037.’“ On the motion of the Mayor; it was decided to instruct the engineer to proceed with the work as soon as possible. The report was then received arid the,delegates were thank-, ed for their services.
