HEALTH CAMPS
FIRST IN GISBORNE JOYOUS TIMES IN OLD ST. HELEN’S HOME The first children’s health camp in Gisborne opened in the old St. Helen’s Home, Childers road, yesterday afternoon. The change in location was due to the destruction of the stand at Alakaraka domain last week. Twenty children arrived yesterday, twelve girls and eight hoys, between the ages of 6 .and 12 years. The ‘inmates include-, seven Alaori children from the East Coast. The home seems to be well suited for the purpose, having had every convenience installed or renewed for the comfort of tlic inmates. The children sleep in three largo rooms. There is ample playing ground, an area. of four acres being attached to the home. The children came in at intervals during the day and at night- time had become thoroughly well acquainted with each other, and joyous .and animated scenes were witnessed.
Dr. Ellen Heycock, medical health officer and Aliss North:, of the Department of Health-, 'are in .residence, and are already very popular with the children.
It is intended, if funds permit,. tO' allow the little inmates to have a full month’s holiday hut this to a large extent will depend on the assistance given by the public. Daily donations of vegetables will bo welcomed by those in charge, and an appeal is made for games such as snakes and ladders, luclo, etc. which will occupy the children prior to bedtime.
