Fourteen charges of thelt involving sums of money totalling over £262t were preferred against William. \n lace McClelland, sharebroker, in the Supreme Court' this morning. McClelland pleaded no.t guilty- Mr Just ei Northeroft presided. McClelland had been for some years a licensed sharebroker- in Christchurch, said Mr Brown for the Grown Prosecutor, hut for soni© time ho had been going round the country purporting to be selling shares, and it Was out of these activities that the charges- .arose. McClelland would extract money undertaking to purchase '.specified shares. Finding they were getting no satisfaction, two of the people sued, him in the civil court. In those cases be allowed judgment to go against him by default, showing that lip should have retimed the money. Other people grew suspicious and handed the matter to the police-. It was then found that McClelland had lci-t the country and was in Australia. He was arrested by the Australian police. . The evidence was lioard and Hie Crown base was concluded this afternoon hand the hearing adjourned, till the morning.
