A shark tragedy occurred on Newcastle beach on Saturday afternoon. Jack Welsh, aged 32, was swimming with two companions JSO yards from the. shore when a largw shark attacked him several times. Both his legs were d*eadfully mutilated above the knees. One arm was also mutilated. The body floated ashore a few minutes later on the crest of the breakers. Death had apparently been instantaneous.'* A companion, Herbert Street, stated that he heard Welsh give a faint cry and disappear under the surface. He realised it would he- futile and positively dangerous to try to help Ho saw the shark’s fins during the attack.
