- . A CHRISTMAS ENTERTAINMENT. Gaily • bo-docked with streamers, tho. Parish Hall presented a .festive/ scene on Monday night, when the Gisborne J Townswomen’s Guild entertained approximately 100 members and friends in a most delightful manner. The programme opened with the National Anthem, after which" community singing, led by Mrs P. Barry and the members of the musical section, was enjoyed. Members of tbo dramatic section, under tbo direction of Mosdames. N. Hooper and E. A. Muis, were responsible for the presentation of two diverting one-act plays : “Madame Miranda’s Beauty Parlor” and “0.H.M.S.” In tbo former tbo well-chosen cast comprised Mesdamos. Lange, E. A. Muis, Scott, Cornelius, Bain and McLoughlin, and in tho latter the various roles were excellently portrayed by Mesdamos. Hooper, McGregor, Hammond, Swain, Johnstone/ and Miss Ourry.

During an interlude, the president, Mrs .T. S. Pan Ids, took the opportunity of explaining that the entertainment was held with a dual purpose—to display the talent of the/ members and tho work achieved durino* the past year and also to raise funds for tho benefit of the Children’s Health Camp, for which she gratefully acknowledged an anonymous donation o!: 10/-. Mrs Faulds also thanked tbo secretary, Mrs F. R. Bould, and tho treasurer, Mrs Garbitt, for their efforts on behalf of the guild. Vocal solos were charmingly rendered by Mosdames. Dennis and tho members of tho musical section, appropriately costumed, were hoard to advantage in the following Christmas enrols: “Christmas, Awake,” “Over tho Fields of Bethlehem,” “Hark, the Herald Angrds Sing,” Christmas Bells” and “Como All Ye Faithful.” “Tho First Nowell,” with Miss B. Darling as the “Angel,” and Mesdames. Bannister, McKenzie and Miss Winchcombo representing the “Three Wise Men,” made a very effective tableau and equally successful was tho presentation of “Good King Wencleas,” the characters being- taken by Mrs Baillie (King Wencleas), Mrs McGregor (the page) and Airs Dennis (the peasant). A delectable supper was served under tbo supervision of Mesdames. Robinson, Campbell, Cornelius, Ryan, GreVlg, Moir, Lewis and Barber. In course of the evening bouquets were presented to Mesdames. Faulds, Lontell (pianistei) and A. Baillie (competitions secretary) and gifts were also made to Mesdames. Barry, Hooper and Muis in recognition of their services in connection with the dramatic section.

Tho very successful entertainment, which brought to a close a year of profitable work and happy companionship, concluded with a jolly dance. * ‘MISS WA IK AN AE. ” A number of young people rallied to tbo support of Miss Fay Morse, tbo representative of the Waikanae Beach Improvement Society in the current bathing belle competition, at a very jolly dance held in the beach kiosk on Saturday night. Everyone thoroughly entered into the festive spirit of the occasion and the programme went with a swing from beginning to end. Mr A. Pilkington was responsible for tho inspiriting music and delightful extras were contributed by Miss E Halbert and Mr H. Patterson.

AN INFORMAL DINNER PARTY. As a pleasant prelude to tho dance organised on Saturday night by the younger members of the committee supporting tho candidature of Aliss Nancy Bruce in tho current bathing hello competition, a very jolly dinner party was arranged hv Miss Barbara Kemp, assisted by Atesdames. F. AA r . Nolan, E. Ewart Brown ’ and the Alisses N. Bruce, P. Price, S. Williams, S. Barton, E. Barker and L. A tiles. Tho function, winch' was held at thri homo of tho hostess, was delightfully informal and met with completo success. Hydrangeas amt stocks in delicate tonings wero artistically combined in the" decoration of the drawingroom and shaded Iceland poppies lent a note of color to the diningroom. Dinner was served in buffet fashion on tho spacious glass-enclosed verandah. Tho guests,, numbering close/ on seventy, later motored to Wainui for tho continuation of the festivities. Airs Kemp welcomed her daughter’s guests, wearing n. graceful frock of chocolate brown fiat crepe and a. matching coatee trimmed with narrow knife-pleated frills. Miss Kemp was very smart in a simply-cut frock of chiffon in a lovely shade of blue, and Aliss Bruce was becomingly attired in broken shot taffetas.

No detail has been overlooked in the preparations for the occasion and, given fine weather, complete success should attend this. novel form of entertainment. Tho. varied amusements will include the offerings of two concert parties and, last, but not least, free transport has been arranged.

TENNIS. Tennis enthusiasts took full advantage of the pleasantly cool weather prevailing on Saturday afternoon, and consequently tha various local clubs presented an animated scene..

Afternoon tea was dispensed at the Gisborne Club by the Misses P. Crawford and D. Barton, shaded Iceland poppies being chosen for the adornment of the tabled in the pavilion.

Among- the players word; dames. B. Ilacche, Olsen, .W. Neal, Baigent, A. M. Welham, A. E. Carrington, D. E. Chrisp and V. Harper; Misses D. Adams, M. Smith, J. Blair and N. Margoliouth. The hostesses at tho Whataupoko courts on Saturday afternoon were Mrs 11. A. Jensen and the Misses R. Jamieson and E. Jclinek. Iceland poppies were used with artistic effect in the decoration of the tea table in tho, pavilion.

A HANDKERCHIEF TEA. On Monday afternoon the Misses G. Sheet and A. Slight invited about fifty, friends .to a delightful handkerchief tea at : the home of . the former in R.ussell ' street, in honor of Miss Grace Smith, to-morrow’s bride. The drawingroom was gay • with summer blooms,'.; .shaded hydrangeas predominating in the artistic decorative scheme. A delectable afternoon tea was served, in the diningroom, delicately tinted sweet • peas- intermingled with maidenhair fern, being, chosen for the adornment of the table. Two diverting competitions provided varied amusement for the guests, and the respective Mrs R. Hansen and Miss’ P. De Oosta—each received an .attractive prize. After tea the numerous parcels were opened by the bride-to-be, who thanked her friends, in a very charming manner for. their gifts.

Mrs -Sheet welcomed the guests,

wearing a gracefully cut frock of navy blu« floral crepe. Miss Sheet’s becoming frock of navy bhio georgette was relieved with white organdie, and Miss Slight was prettily frocke'd in navy blue and white spotted crepo. The guest of honor was smart in a frock ,of white flat crepe printed in a floral design in petunia tonings, and a.whitcl straw hat with petunia trimmings. PIANOFORTE RECITAL. MRS P. R. D. LESLIE’S PUPILS. The delightful pianoforte recital presented by Mrs P. R. D. Leslie’s pupils is always keenly anticipated and Saturday’s 1 function was, like its predecessors, a complete success. Tho guests were received by Mrs Leslie;' who was wearing a smart frock-of brown and white spotted flat crepe" and a wine-colored coat. A velour.- hat completed her outfit. The stage had been completely transformed with great bowls of shaded hydrangeas, Iceland poppies and dahlias advantageously placed on tal) stands. Tho delightfully diversified pro* gramme served to show the versatility of the tuition and reflected the greatest Credit unon Mrs Leslie who, at tho close of tho recital, was overwhelmed with congratulations. A very appreciative audience oweeted the performers and each wellrendered item met with encouraging approval. Consummate taste and perfect technique were displayed by Miss Lucy Brook in a delightful bracket, “Fugue in' E” (Bach) and “Sonata in D” (Mozart), and the presentation of “Intermezzo” (Mascagni) by Miss Shirley Appleton was also a fine performance. the pianiste’s touch in the lighter passages being particularly pleasing.

Brilliant execution was a feature of tho piano trio. “Tho Shepherd.” by tho Misses Joyce and Lesley Witters qnd Nana Elston, and marked success was registered by Master Richard Willock in a solo number, “Moment Musical” (Schubert). A finished interpretation of “Fugue” (Bach) and “Dreaming” (Schumann) was o'iven by Master Brian Dav and Miss Jacquelyn Parsons was heard to advantage in “FirstLoss” (Schumann). Misfi Alison Barnard made a strong appeal to her listeners in a piano solo, “A Passing Storm” (Carroll) and the charming contribution of the Misses Joyce and Lesley Witters, a. vocal duet, “Somewhere a Voice is Calling,” given with clarity and beautiful tone, elicted an encore. Other well-received items included: Piano duet, “Waltz” (Schubert), Priscilla Gambrill and Pamela Chrisp; piano solo, “-Sea Charity,” Marie Humphrey; piano solo, “Rustic Siong,” Eileen Scragg; piano soloi, “Sailor’s Song” (Dunhill), Jim Crothers; piano duet, Roy Smaill and Shirley Humphrey: piano solo, “The Lark” (Tchenkowsky)) ; piano solos, (a) “Minuet” (Bach), (b) “Morning Song,” Priscilla Gambrill; piano solo, “Berceuse” (Hiller), Roy Smaill; piano solo, “Bellringers” (Cumberland), Pam. TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILDThe monthly meeting or the Gisborne Townswomen’s Guild was held recently in Messrs. Findlay’s tearooms. • The chair was taken by Mrs J. S. Faulds and , there was an attendance of 80 members. General business was discussed and a very satisfactory financial statement covering the past year’s activities was presented by the treasurer. On behalf of the members of the o-ardening section, lovely bouquets wero handed to Mrs Faulds and also to Mrs Stevens, secretary of the section. A display of bouquets composed of sweats wrapped in gaily colored paper, tho Xmas gift of the guild to the pai> ient-s in' tho children’s ward at the Cook Hospital, drew much favorable comment. Tho opportunity was taken by Mrs Faulds of thanking tho executive and also Mesdames. P. Barry and Lentolt for their services during the past year. She also announced that tho next meeting of tho guild would take place in February, 1937;. when written nominations for membership would be considered. A delightful playette, “Tho Ermine Cloak,” was presented in the course of the afternoon, the various roles being excellently portrayed by Mesdames. ;E. A. Miiis, Hammond, Cameron and Hunter. Afternoon . tea' concluded n very pleasant gathering. A .GIFT PARTY. .On Saturday,afternoon Mrs V. W. Smith invited a number of friends to a -delightful tea party at her homo in. Whittaker street, in honor of Miss G. Smith, whoso marriage to Mr S. J. Gudsell, of Auckland, takes placo tormovrow. •Carnations and dahlias wore usod with artistic effect in the decoration of tho drawingroom and in the diningroom, where tea was served, richlytinted nasturtiums shed their fragrance; upon the charmingly-arranged table.

A diverting competition was entered into with keen enthusiasm and (ho winner, Mrs D. B. Barry, was suitably rewarded.

Each guest brought a, gift for the prospective bride’s work basket, and tho opening of the parcels revealed a varied assortment of pretty and useful articles. Tlih hostess was wearing a be mining frock of black georgette and lace cut on simple lines. The guest of honor was very smart in a. frock of navy blue triple georgette with white organdie trimmings, and a straw hat to match.

The Wainui Hall presented an animated scene on Saturday night when a 'successful dance was held on behalf of Miss Nancy Bruce, the nominee of’ the District Beautifying Association in tin* bathing belle competition sponsored by tho Gisborne Thirty Thousand Club. Gay and inspiriting music was supplied by Sirs Thomson’s orchestra and the programme went with a swing from start to finish, the pleasantly cool weather being an added stimulus to dancing.

Delightful extras were contributed by Mr M. Pomare.

Supper was served informally during an interlude. Tho committee responsible for the successful organisation of the function comprised tho Misses N. Bruce, S. Williams, P. Price, E: Barker, LMiles, S. Barton and B. Kemp.

The dceis'on. taken four years ago. by flic Cook County Women’s Guild, the local body controlling the institution, to appoint a trained nurse ns matron of the home has been amply justified in Mrs Smale.

It .\s felt that it will he very difficult to fill her place, for not only has the general managemmt of the home been carried out with clock-work precision. as the result of her executive abilities, hut she has also by her kindliness and care for the health and comfort of the children, go'nod their a (Feet ion and respect.

Mrs Smale is the holder of a distinguished. war record, and Ims also successfully held the portions of matron at, Flock House, and the F'oilding Agricultural College. Her resignation was accepted with expressions of heartfelt regret by the committee.

MIS'S R'.S.A. Complete success attended the bright and cheery dance held in the Blue Room on Saturday night on behalf of Aliss Jsobel Barwick, thet representative of the Returned Soldiers’ Association in the bathing belie competition. Tho floor was capably supervised by Messrs. A. 11. Barwick and D. McLeod and there was not a. dull moment from tho opening to the closing number, tho cool weather being an added incentive to dancing-. Air J. Vngg’s orchestra was in splen did form, tho musicians responding most generously to tho repeated demand for eneoro numbers. Delightful extras were contributed by several of tho guests. A Monte Carlo waltz competition proved popular and the winners— Mrs and Aliss Brown—were suitably rewarded. Supper was served informally bv a ladies’ committeo under the direction of Airs R. F. Gam brill. During the evening several estimating competitions, conducted by tho committee for the purpose of further augmenting tho funds, were drawn with the following results: Christmas cake—Alaster Ray Berwick ; hoys’ bicycle—Air R. Houghton (Kaiti) ; dressed doll—Aliss E. Alortimor; soft toy—“ Yip Noddy”; night dress—Aliss 0. Thomas.
