Mr .Roy Trewern (New Zealand) gained honourable mention in the tenor solo at the South Street Competitions at Ballarat.—Press Assn Dr. P. C. Carman, a former pupil of the Southland Boys’ High School, who later gained the degree of doctor of philosophy at London University, has been appointed lecturer in applied chemistry at Capetown University. Dr. D. R. L. Stevenson, the former Otago and New Zealand Rugby representative, has been elected honorary coach to the Scarborough Rugby Club. He was full-back in the New Zealand team which visited Australia in 192 G. Hc< is now in practice in Scarborough. The Fling has arrived at London from a holiday at Balmoral, says a London P.A. cable. He drove L> Buckingham Palace and was unrecognised by the large crowd at Euston Station, which had gathered to welcome him as h 3 sat ; at the back of the car, whereof the rear blinds were drawn. He breakfasted with Queen Mary.

Mr. Peter M. Hansen, nurseryman, of Whakatane, aged 61, married, died suddenly at 11.30 yesterday while delivering a ease of plants to the licensee of the Commercial Hotel there. He stooped to investigate plants in a garden and was suddenly overcome by a seizure, followed by violent hae-mhorrage and expired on the way' to hospital. Deceased was many years in the timber industry at Motn and Matawai.—Press Assn.

At the anual meeting of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association, Mr. W. Stewart drew attention to the fact that the association was losing the services of three of its best members on the executive, Messrs. P- C. Dwyer, A. Baker, and M .K. Boon, whose work had been invaluable, and he moved they be accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mr A. Bigncll second ed the- motion, which, after being sup ported by Mr H. E. Maude, who also referred to the work done by Mx. J. W. Blathwayt, was carried by acclamation. Mr. Dwyer, in responding on behalf of Mr Boon and himself, referred to his happy associations with the executive and paid a tribute to the work of Mr. Maude as chairman. Mr. Baker also responded.
