Tho effect that tho application of the 40-hour week may have upon hotel service in New Zealand is causing concern to proprietors in Wellington. “While the Government has set aside £40,000 for the encouragement of tourist traffic, it is at tho same time driving the tourists away by its illconsidered restrictions upon hotels,” stated ono manager. “If we are to give the service we gave last year the 40-hour week is impracticable. Sooner or later the Government must realise the results of decreased efficiency at hotels and a 48-hour or at least a 44-hour wedk must be allowed.”
