A NUDE STATUE
AT ENTRANCE TO AUCKLAND DOMAIN. TO BE ALLOWED TO REMAIN (Press Association). AUCKLAND, July 21. Tho mule statue of an athlete erected at the entrance, to Auckland Domain, which has been the subject of considerable controversy, was approved by the parks committee of the Auckland City Council before tho wo k of building tho gates was commenced, according to a report submitted io the council by the committee last night. Tho committee also indicated that it did nob propose to take any- further action. A proposal that the statue should be altered “to conform to public good taste,” was defeated by 14. votes to five on a. division.
In a long discussion, Afr. IT. P. Burton advocated the modification of the statue on the grounds of its l possible effect on the youth, of the community. He said that the general attitude of the man in tha street had been to make a jest of the statue and not one per cent of the public was artistically minded. There was no question of the quality of* the sculpture. It was excellent, hut ho.considered the statue was wholly unnecessary in its present form.
