Although it has been stated that this koala, or native bear is in danger of extinction in New South Wales, there is evidence that the number is increasing in Queensland, and it is estimated that there are at least, half a, million bear® in that State. Since August, 1927, which was an open season for hears, the koala has been closely protected. During the last open .season 584.738 skins valued at £137,742 worn obtained. Three open seasons before 1927 were in 1915, 1917 and 1919. In many well-inform-ed quarters it is believed that never again will the Government declare an open season for these quaint, furry little animals whichi are found nowhere else in he world.
