SENIOR BAR 11Y OUR MATCH. POVERTY BAY V. WAIROA. The return match between Poverty Bay and Wairoa for the senior Barry Cup will bo played on the Oval > n Saturday and a large attendance is expected. A fortnight ago the Poverty Bay team journeyed to Wairoa and wore beaten by nine points to eight, so that an exciting match is hound to eventuate on Saturday. Mr Tv. R. Waite will he. the referee. Whitehead (Matawai) and H Beefs (Koranga). OLD-TIMERS’ MATCH. UNUSUAL ATTRACTION ON OVAL ON SATURDAY. What should prove the most popular Rugby attraction presented at th ft Oval for some years will be the oldtimers’ match, North Island v. South Island, to be staged on Saturday at ternooii as a curtain-raiser to the Poverty Bay-Wairoa contest. The committee to whom the task o‘ selection was entrusted found some difficulty in checking up the claims of certain ‘players and in some instances were forced to take past performances at face value. The North Island team will wear red jerseys and the South Island team while jerseys. The referee will he Mr Tv. R. Waite and be will be assisted bv two other well-known referees, Messrs. L. S'tichbury and 11. R. Heiford. Some of the old-timers do not approve of the r.ow rules and a deputation waited on the selectors and asked that the old system of point-scoring he adhered to, ono point being allowed for a penalty goal and mauls behind the linos permitted. The committee lias instructed. the referee and his assistants, however, to take strong action if necessary to keep the game within the modern rules; arid the board of appeal has promised its aid in maintaining tho true spirit of the game. Tbo match will commence at 2
p.m., when Mrs 11. B. Williams, wife of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union patron, will kick'-off from the centre-line. Ji, is intended to have the game completed and the grandstand ground cleared by 2.30 p.m., in order that the major representative fixture should not ho delayed.
