MR WILKINSON CRITICISES GOVERNMENT. AIINISTERS BECOAIE ‘ : CONTROL-MINDED. ’ ’ THINK THEY CAN REGULATE UNIVERSE. PARLIAMENT A FARCE. <Press Association ELTHAAJ, July 15. Addressing his constituents at Rahoto this evening, Air. C. A, Wilkinson, momber for Egmont, vigorously criticised the Labour Party’s .policy. Ho stated that while h 2 admitted Governmental powers must he enlarged from time to time, the Labour Party seemed to want po go to the limit, which woidd eventually mean control by bureaucracy, to the detriment of t .*■; peoplj. Such enlarged powers by the Government mil: t he closely watched and vigorouesly opposed when it was clear that they were dangerous to the nation. ‘Ministers,” ho said, “have become ‘control-minded’ and think they can regulate’ the universe. They had absolute* control over da’ry produce to an extent never previously experienced in any country in the world except Russia, and had control over finance with power to borrow to an unlimited extent, the sky being tho limit. ‘Ministers,” ho continued, ‘‘have rashly rushed in the building of railways, which arc to cost millions without tho authority of Parliament. Tt must be remembered that these railways hava oeen condemned time and again; in fact the Government cannot produce any report from any authoritative source showing that these lines can even pay running expenses. They are going on blind at the country’s expense. ‘‘Parliament,” 'he concluded, ‘‘assembles next week, and legislation will bo mainly' measures authorising tho Government to do exactly as it pleases. Parliament ■seems to have become a farce.”
