SIXTY NEW UNIONS.

\ -REGISTRATIONS in past few MONTHS 47 OF WORKERS AND 13 OF EMPLOYERS 'Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 15, The fact that 60 new unions, or other industrial associations, have been registered in the last few months, or are about to be registered, was revealed yesterday by the Minister of Labor, the Hon. 11. T. Armstrong. With these additions, the number of organisations registered has reached 651, and there are also numerous! applications for registration which have not yet been fully considered. The registration of 25 organisations has been refused to date, but the Minister stated that some of these might subsequently be granted when certain conditions had been complied 'Y with. Of the total number of new and pending registrations, Mr Armstrong continued, 47 were workers’ organisations and 13 were employers’ organisations.

Tn one of the most important fusion's of workers’, organisations for several years, five unions in the Wellington industrial district, have been brought into one group, about. 5000 employees being affected. The unions, which are all of shop assistants, are- as follows: Wellington Retail Grocers Shop Managers’ Union, Wellington Retail Grocers' Assistants’ Union, Wellington Co-opera-tive Butchers’ Union, Wellington. Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants Napier Retail Shop Assistants’ Union. By registration granted by the Labor Department yesterday, these unions have now been united in one organisation, styled the Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants. Every class of shop assistant iri the Wellington industrial district, with the exception of hairdressers' assistants, will he covered under the fusion. Awards will he secured on the .same basis- as those operative at the moment, so that none of tho bodies concerned in the amalgamation will lose their identity. Tho basic of organising the new body was carried out by Mr A. W. O oakery, secretary of the Operative Butchers’ Union and the New Zealand Shop Assistants’ Federation. The officers of the Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants are: President, Mr L. Williamson; vice-presi-dent, Mr A. M. Laird; general sccreraey, Mr A. W. Croskery; associate secretaries, Messrs J. Callanan and W. Coombe; treasurer, Mr A. Needham; trustees, Messrs Holmes «nd A. C. Beere.
