Thursday, the occasion being the birthday of .the Tdkbniarii ’Bay W.J.. Closo on 100 ladies were present, including visitors. .Airs. J. Grant presided. The roll-call, “Sing, say or pay,” was very well responded tor I hero followed vocal items by Mrs. J. Todd and Miss Dowsett for whom Miss D. Conole accompanied. -Mrs. C. tv 'Williams and Miss Tv Beale gave a very interesting talk on Maori action songs and their significance and also sting very sweetly. There follow'd a one-act play, “The Finishing! Touch,’* in which the parts wore taken by Mrs. J. L. Grant, ~Mrs.i Srot, Misses E. Oates and Belle Doig.'. The handsome birthday dike with, iisfour candles and exquisite decorations occupied pride of place. It was made by Mrs. R. Short and iced and decorated by Miss M. Mclv.iy 'and was out and distributed. READING CIRCLE. Tho fortnightly meeting of the Reading Circle at the residence of Mrs. J. Brown was spent pleasantly in the reading of two of J. M. Barrie’s plays, “The Will.” ancl “The Twelve Pound Book.” The parts in tire former were read by Mrs. Nodwell, Mrs. Grant, Mrs. Thacker, Mrs R. Oates and Miss Niven. In the latter play, the parts were taken by Miss Hill. Mrs. R. Gates, Mrs. Thacker land Miss D. Conole. Those present were: Mesdames J. Brown. Grant, Nodwell, Thacker and R. Oates; Misses N. Hill, D. Conole, J. Mitchell, K .Brown, E. Thompson. M. Niven ,B. Doig, A. Johnston, D. Conole and M. Corbett. RUGBY. On Saturday tire local reps, suffered defeat at the hands of Waiapu by 10 to S after a very hard and fast game. Waiapu’s score included two unconverted trios and on o goal kick-', ed from the- field, while Tokomaru’s, points wore made up of two tries, one being converted. Mr. N. Rungarunga was the referee. SURPRISE PARTY, Mr and Mrs. E. Knox were taker by surprise on Saturday night when a jolly party of young lolk culled on them in the form of a lions 2-warmirig party. All thoroughly enjoyed themselves dancing ■on the spacious side’ verandah. Community singing proved, as popular as ever. Those responsible for the delightful music ware Misses D. and I. Conole, Messrs R. Riseborough, F. Nathan, A, Haydon, Y. Cull inane. A. very dainty supper was served after which Mr, Gully, on behalf of tho visitors, thanked Mr and Mrs. Knox for making ihem so welcome and, at the same time, wished them every success in their new sphere of life.,Mr. Ivnox suitably replied, Those present included Me*-, dames Knox, Alexander and P.
