RETURN OF THE CHAPERONE.

From England is reported the return of the chaperone. The next tiring we will hear is that a girl has blushed. 'file last authentic blush recorded was in 1913. That was when a bargee overheard a conversation between two girls. It was the bargee who blushed. It fell in tho days when the chaperone, .Seated once more on her ancient throne And wielding her ancient power, Kept watch and ward o’er the whirling throng, Guarding tho tender debutante Unfolding into flwor. A damsel sweet with a downcast eye Bewildered the dancers by locking shy, And the other maidens glat'ed Because of powder and paint no trace Covered her nude and shameless face, All wondering how she dared. Sudden the damsel trembling paused In wild-eved fear at the shock she caused, While tho throng was stilled and hushed; And slow to her cheeks rose a. crimson tide, Like a breaking dawn, and a shrill voice cried: “Jo-m-salem! She blushed!” For a silent space they watched that stain As a, wrecked form waits for the rush of pain That comes from a shattering wound. Then someone gurgled a sound like “Gosh!” And an unbeliever snorted “Bosh!” And the hand conductor swooried. At his fall, from the frozen tension freed, The women broke in, a wild stampede— The injured strewed the floor; But young men thought it rather nice And asked if she could do it twiceThey’d not seen one before !• —“Oriel” in the Melbourne Argus.
