10C0 NEW JOBS IN TWO MONTHS
(U.P.A. by Elec. Tel. Copyright). (Received July 3, midnight). SYDNEY, July 3. Considerable opposition was displayed by a section of the Labour Party in the State Assembly to the Government’s proposal to sell a large tract of land at Port Kc-mbla to Australian Iron and Steel Limited, which is about to embark on new industries and will spend £1,000,000. The Alinister for Local Government (Afr. Spooner) explained that the Government would receive £55,000 for tho land. This money would be do voted to developing an electricity supply for adjoining towns. He foreshadowed that as an industrial centre Port Kembla would be second only to Newcastle, where the Broken Hill Proprietary Company’s works aro employing 12,037 hands and the weekly wage bill is £63,80-5.
Ho said the industries to be established at Port Kemlyi would include pigiron. steel, galvanised iron, sheets, tinplate and tin containers, wire netting, wire nails, motor bodies, aeroplanes and aeroplane parts. At least 1000 additional men would he employed within two months. He repudiated a suggestion hv Labour members that the Government was aiding a monopoly, adding: “There is still ample land at that port for a toother industries.” • The Bill for the sale of the land passed all stages.
