TO BE COMPLETED

RAILWAY FROM TANEATUA to OPOTIKI.

PREMIER’S PROMISE WILL BE KEPT. HON. D. SULLIVAN AT OPOTIKI to Tim.es) OPOTIKI, June 30. The Minister for Railways (Hon, D. G. Sullivan) visited Opotild yesterday and was welcomed by the Mayor (Mr. G. S. Moody). A deputation from the Railway Leaguo waited on him to urge the completion of the Taneatua-Opotkii railway.' The Minister, in reply, stated that tho deputation had every right to bo keen on the railway. The Government’s estimate for the completion was £600,000. but this might be lessened by the use of up-to-date machinery being introduced by the Hon. 11. Semple. He would like figures to show that the opening of tho line would reduce the losses cl tho present line. If the solemn promises made by the people were carried out, there would be no losses, but large firms were not keeping their promises. He admitted that the service rendered by tho railway should not be altogether judged on tho ordinary commercial possibilities. One had to judge the success in the light of the total benefit on the hfo of; the community. It was not possible to say when the railway would he completed, hut they had the promise'of the Prime Minister that 't would ho completed.
