A jolly air of informality prevailed and gav music was supplied by Mr S. Sheet’s orchestra, each number being repeatedly encored. Supper was provided by the supporters of the basketball and a eroquent candidate. Mrs J. R. Murphy, who was present during the evening. Rugby enthusiasts were responsible for the hot dog stall and the soft drinks were under the charge of supporters of the lawn tennis representative.

A SURPRISE PARTY On Friday night Mah-jong was chosen for the' entertainment oi' ! the gtKfefe at a. very jolly surprise party organised by the Misses Norma Steele and Mona Bfa*V at the house of Mr. V. C. R. M’tford, the representative of cricket in the Festival of Sport campaign. Iceland puppies, gallardias and roses were artistically combined m the decoration of the drawing-room, and a. large log fire offered a cheeiy welcome. A delectable supper was served iu the dining-room, -a. bowl of lev laud pop piles lend n g a- touch of colour to the charmingly arranged table. Miss M. Macaulay received the guests wearing a smat t frock of bottle green lace and a matching coatee. AN INFORMAL DANCE A delightfully informal dance wao g : vcn by Miss Barbara Kemp at her homo in Russell street on Saturday night. The rooms were gay with flowers a.nd huge log fires 'offered a pleasant contrast to the wintry weather out of doors. The .spacious verandah—-so admirably adapted to such an occasion—made an ideal ballroom, and dancing was enjoyed to enspiriting music. Hydrangeas and brilliantly-hued borrios. were alluringly combined in the decoration of the drawingroom, whore a delectable supper was served, a bowl of Iceland poppies was used with artistic effect in the adornment of the table. The rooms wore gay .with flowers, Tc; ’land poppies, tree marigolds and daphne predominating in the artistic decorative scheme, while large log tiers added to the atmosphere of charm. A delectable bullet supper wa.s served during an interlude in the play. Airs. Tolerton was start in a. model flock of brick red .suede sal/ii, designed with a pleated bodice. CLUB HOUSE DANCE The members of the Gribo ne Park Golf CM ll b wre respons'ble for a bright and cheery dance in the chib house on Saturday night lor the benefit o'! Br. H. H. D'e Costa, 'their cam! date in the Festival of Sport Campaign at presivnl being conducted in Gisborne.

Red ami white streamers fluttered gaily overhead in the dance room, while g eenerv, intermingled with red artifio’-al flowers adorned the wall spaces, forming an effective setting for the guests. Airs. Menses’ orchestra was in splendid form, the musicians responding most: generously to the repeated demands for encodes, and delightful extras were contributed by Airis N. Williams. A delicious hot savoury supper was served at tables beautified w’th crimson geraniums, combined with matching streamers. No detail had been overlooked in the preparations for the occasion, and much of the e iedit for the success achieved was undoubtedly due to the efforts of the committee, who- are to be congratulated on the gratifying- re-' suit. WHANGARA W.I. On account oi illness' amongst the members, tlio attendance was smaller than usual at the monthly meeting of the Whangara Women’s Institute, held on Thursday afternoon. The chair was taken by Mrs T. Andrews. A warm welcome was extended to a visitor, and two new members— ■ Mesdames. Hope and Ferris—weio enrolled. Following the conclusion of routine business, a pleasant social hour was enjoyed during which tea was dispensed by Mesdames. C. IT. Seymour and Mclntosh. The meet of the Poverty Bay; hounds at Poitawa is always keenly anticipated and Saturday’s fixture was, like its predecessors, a complete success. There teas a large attendance at tho Parish Hall on Monday night when the Gisborne Repertory Society staged three plays in connection villi tho eliminating tests for the forthcoming Drama Festival. The characters in tho first produriion. “Tho Bond of Poplars,” presented by Miss J. Irvine, were portrayed by Miss Irvine and Messrs. R. Mexico!, W. Kolm. H. Wall and W. .1 Sinclair. Tho second play, “A Clean Life. ’ was produced by Mr AY. Kolm and tho cast included Mr R. McNicol. Miss P. Lange and Messrs. W. Kolm and TT. Wall. i\liss C. Oman was responsible for tho-third production, a fantastic drama, from the pen of Eric Bradwell. the various parts being taken by Mrs W Kohn. Misses C. Oman, S. ‘Porteus, M. Nelson. J. Irvine. D. Adams P Lange and Messrs. A\ . Kohn and G Ti/Feii. At tho close of the entertainment “The Road of Poplars” was awarded first place by popular vote.

ROWING CLUB DANCE. The popularity of the series of dances organised by the Poverty 13av Rowing Club w;.is evidenced by the largo attendance at the club house on Monday night. Black and white streamers, Die colors of the club, struck a distinctive decorative note, forming an effective setting for tho pretty frocks. Tho floor was capably supervised by Mr F. Gardner and Mrs Menzies orchestra was responsible for the delightful music. Much-enjoyed extras wore contributed by Miss G. AVilson. A Monto Carlo waltz contest was n popular item of the programme and was won by Mrs Dolman and Mr \A . Jladwen, while Miss J. AVarren and Mr G. Lannigan were the winners of u lucky number competition.
